Celebs Urge Moms to De-Stress With A Hammock. What's Your Escape?
I’m always thinking about ways to relax. Trust me, in pregnancy and motherhood, everybody needs to find their way to relax. My girlfriend Gina Stern, who owns D_parture Spa in Newark Airport, loves to relax by swinging in a hammock. Not too long ago, I was having a major mommy meltdown. She suggested we take the hammock to the beach and sit near the ocean. I suggested she was crazy and not at all listening to what I was saying. How can swinging in a hammock help me when I’m having a business and personal crisis!
So you can imagine the crow I have been eating all week, when I heard about National Hammock Day and a new initiative to encourage moms to de-stress and find some moments of peace by swinging in a hammock. Every mom needs her place to regroup. This is an important lesson for you to learn even now during pregnancy. Though hammock swinging probably isn’t recommended when you have a bump, the principle is critical.
So, as much as I didn’t want to hear the “I told you so,” I had to let my girlfriend know. The event in NYC was hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford, new mom Bethenny Frankel from "The Real Housewives of New York City" and Kathy Rutherford of "Gossip Girl," in an effort to bring awareness to Childhelp, a national non-profit dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect. The premise is simple, fewer stressed out moms means less child abuse and neglect. Makes sense.
I couldn’t attend but I thought it would be a great to send Gina as my hammock-loving ambassador to report back to us on how moms can de-stress and to get the scoop on Bethenny’s life as a real mom of New York City.
Here's what we asked Bethenny about motherhood and finding her escape.
We asked: How is motherhood different than what you expected?
Bethenny said: You have to be there every moment, you have to be hyper aware and hyper focused. That's good for me though because I have to be present. It takes me away from this life (she was referring to celebrity).
We asked: How do you balance motherhood and career?
Bethenny said: I'm still working that out. I struggle with the guilt of having to leave the baby for work or travel. I make it up by cuddling. I love sleep. Now I fight more to get rest rather than to go to the gym.
We asked: If I gave you back five hours of your day how would you spend those hours?
Bethenny said: YOGA! and cuddling my baby.
And the best mom advice from Kathie Lee Gifford was simple yet profound: don’t miss those key childhood moments.
