"Clean Start Challenge" Mommy 101: Always Be Prepared to Try Something New
Here’s a basic rule of mommyhood: don’t be afraid to swap in a plan B. Things change, your needs change, your kids' moods change, so a mom always has to be prepared to change plans for the sake of her family or her sanity.
My Clean Start Challenge buddy Crystal has been learning about swapping in some plan B’s with her new cooking endeavors. As part of the clean start challenge she set out to learn how to cook healthy meals for her family, get on some sort of exercise routine all while juggling the demands of a new baby. So far, so good.
Crystal has lost seven pounds and counting, (you go girl!!) while becoming a culinary queen with her meal preparations. To do this, she applied the “swap in” rule to make her meals healthier without sacrificing the YUM!
It’s something I’ve been trying myself. I gotta tell you, I make a mean macaroni and cheese. The kids and I love it! But lately, I’ve been using low fat milk and whole wheat pasta just to increase the nutritional content of my meals, and the kids haven’t noticed one bit. Phew!
Swapping out to make things better is what we do as moms. If you’ve been thinking about cooking healthier meals, here are some simple ways to substitute your favorite ingredients for a healthier alternative. You can easily lower the fat, salt or sugar of your favorite recipes while increasing the fiber. Hey, as every mom also knows, every little bit helps.
1. Instead of white flour, try whole wheat flour.
2. Instead of butter, shortening or oil, try applesauce or prune puree for half of the required butter or shortening.
3. Instead of dry bread crumbs, try rolled oats or crushed bran cereal.
4. Instead of unsweetened baking chocolate, try three tablespoons dry cocoa, plus two teaspoons of sugar and one tablespoon of oil.
