So You Want to Start a Blog
The first question you need to ask yourself is why? Are you looking to make money and if so, how much are you looking to make and how do you plan on doing so? Advertising, affiliate marketing or pr campaigns.
Or are you just doing it because you have something to share or just for fun? If so how often do you plan on writing and what is your ultimate goal? Some people start a blog simply because they want to get some free gear.
Another reason you might want to start a blog is to promote a business and if that’s your position then you need to decide on whom you want your readers to be. For example are you a web designer that wants to write about web design and share information and news to other designers or do you want to sell and promote your services as a web designer.
I original starting blogging to promote my online store and wound up launching bizziemommy.com as a service to other work at home moms and/or entrepreneurs to encourage myself and others to really follow their passions. I graduated with a Journalism degree and wrote screenplays as a hobby so writing is a natural habit for me.
But not everyone loves writing and not everyone can. So it’s important to understand why you want to start a blog before buying the domain and downloading Wordpress.
Another thing you should do is set realistic goals and expectations. Trying to position yourself as the next Dooce is an unrealistic goal as her success is more of anomaly then the norm. Obtaining a loyal following takes time and perseverance and more than likely it won’t happen overnight. Just like making millions, there are plenty of e-books out there guaranteeing it but expecting to make a million dollars is an unrealistic goal. Setting such high expectations often leads to blogger burn out and most people will toss the idea in the trash before it gets started.
Making money and gaining a loyal following are things that take time, passion and perseverance if you have all those things and have something really great to say then you are leading in the right direction of blog success.
So you’ve set some goals, narrowed down what you want to write about and who you want your audience to be, what do you do now?
Now comes the fun part, well it is for me at least, it’s time to create a launch plan. To get started here are some questions you will need to ask yourself.
- What blogging platform are you going to use?
- Will need to hire a designer or will you be doing it yourself?
- Do you have a domain name and is it marketable?
- How often do you plan on posting?
- Do you have an editorial calendar in place?
- Do you have an elevator pitch?
Those are just a few things everyone should consider before starting a blog.
