Against the Wall, Against the Family

Have you ever made a decision that your family disagrees with? Did you marry someone of a different race or religion that your family didn’t approve of? Have you ever made a life decision that no one but yourself believed in. Making life decisions is challenging, making them alone without family support is even harder.

To me there is nothing worse than being excited about a promotion, new job or a new baby then having no one to celebrate with you. I’m pretty lucky to have a supportive husband and family, even though they don’t agree with ALL of my decisions, I have faith that when needed they will be stand by my side.

But it’s not that easy for everyone.

The other day I watched the premiere of "Against the Wall," a new drama series on Lifetime TV, and started thinking about how I would handle Abby’s situation. In the show, Abby takes a detective job in Internal Affairs and has to defend her decision against her father and three brothers, all of which are police officers. They all feel betrayed by her decision even though she only took the job to make detective.

At first I would do exactly what she did, try and keep it from as many people as possible for as long as I can. But I have about the same luck as she does, of course I will run into someone at the wrong time and wrong place and my cover will be blown. That’s just my luck. Before we were married my husband and I decided to move in together, I didn’t tell my parents. And of course they decided to come and visit the weekend before the move, all of my stuff was in boxes and I had to explain why.

Looking back now, I hate that I couldn’t just tell them EVERYTHING and I hope my children don’t share the same fate.
