Along Came a Spider and Dramatic Look for Moms
It’s always a good sign on "Project Runway" when the designers are sent to a place that has nothing to do with fashion. That means a seriously interesting challenge is going to be dropped on them. On the latest episode of "Project Runway All Stars", the designers gathered at The Museum of Natural History where Alyssa told them they would be using the museum’s latest exhibit, The Power of Poison, as inspiration. Insects and arachnids will be the focus for this…wait for it…avant-garde challenge. I know you all love a good avant-garde challenge as much as I do!
Sometimes the designers don’t go far enough in my opinion. I mean, it’s avant-garde…I want to see them get CRAZY with it! Innovation and playing it safe do not go hand in hand. Who’s with me? And while I’m definitely not a bug girl, I can totally see how a spider would make an uber cool muse even if they do make me shudder. Speaking of shuddering…The avant-garde nature of the challenge wasn’t the only twist. The designers were given just 10 hours to complete their looks. EEEEEEK!
The day started out on a high point for Elena thanks to her first challenge win. She was able to select her inspiration insect first, but it went downhill from there…She lost her sketch and materials list at Mood and subsequently melted down because she couldn’t remember if she had grabbed everything she needed to create her grasshopper inspired look. Yep…I said grasshopper. I thought that was an interesting choice…but then again, she’s terrified of spiders and I totally get that. Spiders are not my favorite. Just sayin’.
After everyone got settled into the new workroom, Zanna paid them a visit. She and I are obviously on the same page when it comes to avant-garde challenges, because she told them ALL that their looks weren’t going to cut it. They needed to push the boundaries and do so FAST!
Luckily a few of them took her words to heart and stepped it up. Irina’s floaty black confection of a gown was just what Melissa referred to it as… “a showstopper!” The way it moved as the model walked down the runway was simply breathtaking. Michael scrapped his all green getup and created an amazing grey and green ensemble that looked, in a word, luxe! The intricate pleating on the jacket was simply incredible. And then there was Elena…oh Elena…After all the drama, she not only ended up in the top two…she WON with her multi-hued grasshopper inspired space age mini dress. While there were definitely many successes on the runway this go around, there were also some missteps. Jeffrey attempted to up the drama factor by adding a hood to his design that detracted from it more than it enhanced it, while Daniel’s high necked dress was a mish mosh of too many ideas and the fabrics looked less than expensive. In the end, it was Daniel’s turn to say goodbye and I can’t say that I disagree with the judges’ decision. There aren’t many instances where I can get behind lame…Talk about scary!
This week, I used Irina’s oh so dramatic black gown, for inspiration. It was fierce and feminine at the same time, which I loved! And speaking of drama…Before I put together an outfit, my favorite way to add drama is to start with my face. Dramatic eyes go a long way and a great mascara is a most necessary step to achieve that drama! Mary Kay® Lash Love® Mascara in I ♥ Black is the perfect finishing touch for the look I styled!
My makeup artist chum finally got me on the bold eyes bandwagon and those fabulous eyes deserve a look that’s worthy of them no? Crop tops are not something that I would consider to be overly wearable for most of us. Am I right? There is a workaround however…Pair a crop top with a high waisted beaded skirt, so that just a mere hint of a midriff is showing, or none at all if you wear your skirt high enough, and you will definitely make a dramatic statement!
