Beauty Discussion: Should I Get Botox?
A couple of weeks ago I started talking with a friend and colleague of mine about, well, the things women talk about. Kids, aging, beauty...botox. Yes, Botox. Ahhh, the eternal fountain of youth - in a syringe.
My colleague mentioned that she knew someone who had gotten Botox. Her main point was that her friend did everything "naturally" - only eats organic food, major exercise fanatic - you know, one of THOSE. The perfect ones who seem to do it all right and care for their bodies as God intended. However, her "all-natural" friend made an appointment and had some lunchtime Botox done.
It seems that none of us are immune to the constant pressures of a society where looks aren't everything, but, well let's be honest -- they help. I'm the first to admit that while I'm the world's biggest wimp, with absolutely no threshold for pain, I am by no means against plastic surgery - or Botox for that matter. I think the way we feel about how we look is a part of the female psyche - when a woman truly believes that she looks good, she FEELS good - and our inner kick-butt confident selves originate from the place where we feel like a smokin' hot goddess.
Or, something like that.
So today, I asked my Facebook friends their thoughts on Botox. Interestingly enough, the usual suspects did not respond, but people who rarely respond to my status updates did. The responses ranged from a makeup artist saying that she wasn't against it in the least, but would try to hold out as long as possible just in case something better came along -- to one of my mom's lifelong friends saying she just didn't feel the need for it at this point in her life - but that she wasn't ruling it out in the future. Others pointed out that Botox served other therapeutic purposes and was not just a cosmetic procedure. One friend even flat-out said she had done it and loved it - she just wished that it lasted longer and didn't give her headaches.
I'm kinda vain and frankly feel that my time in the Botox chair will come, but my concern has always been over what Botox is made from - in and of itself it is a lethal substance - though it has never caused a death when being used properly for cosmetic purposes. As another Facebook friend pointed out - at least it is a naturally occurring substance, and not something manufactured completely from the ground up.
So what are your thoughts on our rapidly growing "Botox Nation"? Would you consider Botox? Would you consider the procedure if you thought no one would ever know about it? What about other cosmetic procedures? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
