Fashion Advice - Go with a Monochromatic Look
For moms, keeping up with the latest fashion trends can be - well, a little tough. We don't have as much time as we used to to read/devour fashion magazines, watch the daily celeb entertainment shows or be perusing boutiques and stores checking out the latest trends. Thse trends come and go, so it's important to know and have some "safe" trends in your wardrobe that will never go ot of style.
One of these is the Monochromatic style. The Monochromatic style is simply wearing the same color from head to toe. OK, maybe not from head... but you get the idea. What is so fantastic about this style is that it's easy to do and that it truly is a very classic and chic look. You can make the look elegant, you can make it subtle, you can make it sexy, you can make it anything you want it to be -- that's the beauty of this easy style. Also, (and this is a biggie!) wearing Monochromatic clothing gives the illusion that you're taller and slimmer. When you dress in one color it produces an unborken vertical line that elongates your body. Music to any woman's ears, right?
The most popular type of Monochromatic style is the wearing of all black clothing. It truly is such an elegant and sophisticated look. When I lived in NYC, I wore all black nearly everyday of the week. I just loved that I could toss on a black pencil skirt, black crewneck sweater and black heels and be ready for work in a flash. I remember watching Sex and the City in the early years and always seeing the character Miranda in Monochromatic clothing. I think that most people gravitate towards wearing all-black because most of us have black clothing in our wardrobe, it's not something we have to go out to seek, find and buy. I love being able to toss on my black sweatpants, my black fleece zip-up jacket and my black flips and drop my sons from preschool feeling (dare I say it) chic. That's why I love the Monochromatic look because it really exudes a confidence and chicness -- even just with sweats on!
Here are 5 tips when it comes to perfecting this look:
1.) When I have given this fashion advice before, the question always seems to be, "Can you get away with wearing other colors?" Yes! Yes! And another, yes! Definitely try and wear different colors monochromatically.
2.) Start off with one piece - top, bottom, shoe, dress, coat - and work from there. You'll be amazed how easy it is to put together an outfit when you start with one piece. I used to always start with a fabulous top and then go from there...
3.) Do not limit yourself to wearing the exact shade of the color from head to toe. Use different variations. By wearing different tones of blues and greens and grays and reds and purples, you will make the outfit look that much more chic and trendy.
4.) Pump up the accessories! And no, they do not have to follow the monochromatic look. I used to love to pair my all-black outfits with pearls or gold/silver chain link necklaces or gold cuffs.
5.) Don't be afraid to use different textures in the fabric department. This will definitely add to the trendy and chicness level.
