The Holiday season has begun, and that can only mean one thing. Dum dum dum ... Holiday parties! The time of year when, without fail, I survey all of the clothing in my closet and loudly declare "Nope. None of this will work," and then sag, dejectedly, against the nearest wall. (This is usually so that anyone within earshot may be so inclined to offer up a credit card or other sources of funding.)
Before you hit the frantic oh-no-that-party-is-tomorrow-how-did-I-let-it-sneak-up-on-me stage, start paying attention to items that you see now while you're out shopping, and consider adding them to your Holiday wardrobe possibilities. Not only are you much more likely to avoid the Holiday wardrobe stress, but with more time on your hands it is entirely possible that you won't have to break the bank to get the look that you are dreaming of.
This Holiday season, the hottest trend leaves more than just the Christmas tree twinkling. Sparkle, shimmer, and shine are everywhere for 2009, and what a perfect way to usher in the beginning of a new decade! While I generally agree that "less is more" when it comes to most looks - like choosing a statement piece to accent simple looks and staying away from anything too flashy or sparkly - I believe the Holidays are an exception to this rule. Sparkle and shimmer are generally accepted during the Holiday season, but will be played up more than ever this year. Choose a sparkly clutch, a top with a bit of shimmer, or even infuse some of that sheen into your shoes. Work the shimmer trend much like you do a statement piece - one major item per ensemble and you're safe. However, if you're doing all black, sparkling earrings, bracelet, and shimmery shoes all work in unison.
As a general rule of thumb, the younger you are, the more sparkle you can pull off in your look. Go for an all-over sequin dress, a sequin skirt, or bold shimmer top. Remember that the key to any look is to feel fantastic in it - if you look confident no one ever questions your wardrobe choice. If you don't feel as confident in all-over shimmer, then tone it down by sticking to sequin trim along the hemline and neckline, or shimmer detailing.
So, be a bit bold, be a bit daring, and be a bit sparkly this Holiday season! You won't be sorry that you did!
