How to Avoid Makeup Meltdown
According to the nice ladies behind the makeup counter, I have what you'd call combination skin - you know - a blend of both normal and slightly oily skin.
In the Louisiana summer heat, I find that my "combination skin" is in full force - only this time it's a combination of really shiny and very oily. As Tim Gunn once said to me "I feel like a self-glazing donut". (For the record, I am totally waiting for the right moment to use that line myself, and then casually drop in the fact that Tim used it in conversation with me. And that I call him Tim. Because I'm a total name-dropping snob like that.)
What was I saying? Oh yes.
Oh emm gee it's hot. And I am shiny. And I don't like it.
So what's a girl to do to keep her makeup smudge-proof and shine-free? Don't worry, there are a few great tips and products that I can share to keep you feeling cool, even when it's unbearably hot.
#1) Use a primer underneath your foundation. It will help to keep your makeup in place for a bit longer and keep shine at bay. Two to try? Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Light ($36) or Rimmel London's Fix & Perfect Foundation Primer ($7.59) - available at ULTA.
#2) Waterproof Eyeliner is your best friend. You've heard of waterproof mascara (and yes, it's still awesome) but for that ultra sexy look that won't fade as soon as you walk out the door, give a waterproof eyeliner a spin. Especially great for beach or pool days! Two to try? ULTA Waterproof Automatic Eyeliner ($7) or Stila Smudgestick Waterproof Eyeliner ($20).
#3) Long-wearing lip color. Combine eating, drinking, and talking with the summer heat and you have lip color with virtually non-existent staying power. Try a long-wearing lip color in a sweet, summery shade for a leg up on the competition. Two to try? Stila Longwear Liquid Lipcolor in Coral ($22) and Revlon ColorStay Soft Smooth Lipstick Smooth Nude ($10).
#4) Wear dangly earrings in the pool. Ok, so this one isn't about smudge-free makeup, but I have been dying to share that tip with the world. Why doesn't anyone tell you about wearing heels and big dangly earrings with your bikini? Seriously. I will teach my daughter this so that she may have an advantage that I did not (once she is 40 and allowed to wear a bikini/leave the house, that is).
#5) Ready, SET! Not ready, set, go - just set. Use a finishing spray to give your skin a needed moisture boost, cool you off, and keep your makeup in place for a good bit longer and helps to control the shine on your skin. My favorite? Urban Decay Cosmetics De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray ($29) available at ULTA.
