Invest in Some Leather
I'm always asked, "What items should you invest a little more money into?" My answer has been the same for years -- handbags and shoes. In particular, leather handbags and shoes.
When it comes to shopping and adding items into your wardrobe, you want to make sure that some items are good quality and will last (and last and last). You don't want to continually replace certain items each season. It's important to add timeless pieces, items that will certainly age with you, and truly remain classic standbys.
When it comes to shoes, I always recommend investing in a pair of black leather heels and/or leather boots. Heels are an essential item to have simply because they can be worn with anything -- trouser pants, skirts, dresses, capris, jeans and even leggings. Talk about shoe-versatility at its finest. Boots are a great addition to have in there, too. Why boots? It's just fashion sensible - you can wear boots with so many different outfit combinations. Right now in particular with jeans - worn over the jeans or under. The reason I recommend investing in leather heels and boots is because of the quality -- you can get so many, many uses from a high-quality pair of leather boots. I actually have a pair of black leather riding boots that I have had for 5 years - by looking at them, you would never know it. They fit me like a glove and they are absolute perfection.
With handbags, it's the same kind of quality-lasting logic. There's nothing like investing in a spectacular leather handbag. I remember when I first moved to NYC, I bought myself a tan Coach leather hobo bag. It cost $150 and was way beyond my budget (after all, I did have rent to pay!), but I bought it... and truth be told, I still have it - and it still is my go-to brown bag whenever I'm heading out. As a matter of fact, I carried it the entire time I was at the BlogHer conference in Chicago this past summer.
When it comes to taking care of our "fashion selves" we often become a little less important, at least now with kids and a house and parental responsibilities. So it's usually in our natures to purchase some things that are affordable and fast. We don't have the time to peruse boutiques and stores and the mall anymore because our purchases need to be made and done with. It never ceases to amaze me how many women will email saying that their handbags and shoes constantly need to be replaced. The difference with these items is that we are using them (mostly) every single day. They need to be good quality.
Leather lasts... and lasts... and lasts.
