The Kardashion Fashion Effect
I'm addicted. Oh, yes... ADDICTED to the show Keeping up with the Kardashians. I also am addicted to all the Kim wedding news (please tell me I'm not alone). You know it's a problem when you start planning and rearranging your schedule around the show. Oh, yes... I have actually been known to cancel plans and postpone meet-ups due to the airing. Sad, but true. My poor husband... he cannot understand my fascination with the show and for that matter, nor can my sister or my best friend.
But I watch the show and have become a total devotee because of one reason -- the fashion. Oh, mama... the fashion pours through the show for me like a fine wine!
From Mama Kris to Kourtney to Kim and to Khloe... their fashion is something that I absolutely, positively adore, admire and observe. Crazy, right... to watch a show simply for the fashion and completely bypass the drama the storylines and the "juice" of it all. For me, the fashion is the juice.
These 4 leading ladies embody the differences and the beauty of (and in) fashion that allow people to relate and see a piece of themselves within their fashion choices. No joke, their clothing corresponds directly with their personalities. It's almost eery.
How many times in your life have you looked at fashion and named a celebrity that you identify with? Probably hundreds of times in your life, right? And it's always through cycles. When 90210 was hot, I wanted to dress like Kelly (a.k.a. Jenny Garth). When "Friends" was hot, I wanted to dress like Rachel (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston). When "Sex and the City" was hot, I wanted to dress like Carrie (a.k.a. Sarah Jessica Parker). We find celebrities that we admire and love and begin to identify with... I'll hear from most moms that... "I love Reese Witherspoon's style or Jessica Alba or Jennifer Lopez or Jennifer Garner." These are attainable fashion icons, we see their style... we have gotten to know them, and so we associate the style with them. And for me (right now)... the Kardashians are knocking it out of the park.
Even down to their earrings!
I remember when I interned one summer at ABC's The View with the Fashion Stylist Fran Taylor. It was the first time in my life I realized that fashion was actually something that was just as important to the show as the characters. Each lady (at that time it was Meredith Viera, Star Jones, Joy Behar, Lisa Ling and Barbara Walters) had their own distinct style. You were tuning in for different views, but also getting different styles with each view. I actually remember Fran saying to me, "It's like painting a picture... you want to have balance and strength." I have always remembered that. Fashion is about balance and strength... beyond the beauty.
So, bringing it back to my girls... Kris, Kourtney, Kim and Khloe... they depict 4 completely different types of styles, and I love watching and seeing how they mix and match and just make it all work. It's effortless for them. I would almost venture to say it's aspirational fashion watching, but the truth is... I do gather advice and tips from the show and then I make purchases with them in mind. I do. It's working. The Kardashian Effect is working. Recently I saw Kourtney rock a Fedora and thought to myself, "Yeah... I can do that." And seeing Khloe rock leopard printed heels... yeah, I bought a pair. Or watching Kim sport some red bold lipstick... I tried it.
And so, I've become a Kardashian fashion wannabe...
You have Kris, or as I like to call her... Mama Kris. Kris' style is classic and regal. She rocks a blazer like nobody's business.
You have Kourtney who embodies the boho style to perfection.
You have Kim who is a fashion siren, she's glitz and glamour and Hollywood.
You have Khloe who is edgy and romantic, both at the same time, yet not afraid to be sexy (at all).
There are pieces of everyone within their fashion-personalities, and I love that. And I think it's important for moms to see women rocking styles and trends that are attainable. As moms running to work and school and church and practices, we may not get the opportunities to rock fedoras and leopard heels and red lipstick all the time, but when the time presents itself -- we can. We can be ready and willing to take the Kardashain fashion leap of faith. I have begun to take pieces in my own closet and make them work like the girls have on the show. Everyone's always asking me for examples of celebrities who are fashion'ing it right, and I feel like the Kardashian Family are the new Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. They've become fashion icons.
Fashion is something that's fun and expressive... and the Kardashian family embodies that.
It's having an effect.
I have even thought to myself (don't laugh) while standing in the mirror admiring an outfit -- oh, this is so something Kim would wear.
But, yes. It's true.
My name is Audrey and I have been affected by the Kardashian Family.
