Maternity Must-Haves by Trimester
Having been pregnant 4 times, I've thoroughly embraced maternity fashion. Experimenting in all of the "new" stores (and sections in stores) with maternity designers and styles and trends and colors throughout each of my nine months was so much fun for me. I wanted to be that chic pregnant mama. But as the weeks progressed, my belly was getting bigger and my body was changing, so looking chic was not always on the top of my list. That's when "comfortable" crept into the equation. I started to want to be comfortably chic.
There are a few staple pieces that every pregnant woman should have in her wardrobe for that comfortably chic look. I know that it can sometimes feel overwhelming and costly, especially with all the incredible fashions, and gear and accessories available right now. So make it easy on yourself by finding fabulous items that translate into multiple uses throughout the 40 weeks.
A maternity or non-maternity wrap dress.
The beauty of the wrap dress is the wrap portion. You can make it as tight or as a loose as you want. It's the perfect go-to piece when it comes to versatility. When I was pregnant with my first son in 2004, all I wanted to do was head out and buy something "maternity." It was almost like that official badge, but as most pregnant women will tell you, you don't need true maternity pieces until farther along in your pregnancy. The wrap dress can be your new best friend. If your pants are beginning to get a little tight, wrap yourself in a dress. I lived in wrap dresses throughout my pregnancies, and since it is a wrap, and you have the ability to adjust it, it's the perfect piece to transition into the second and third trimesters (and also post-pregnancy!). Wrap dresses are timeless, sophisticated, elegant, chic and comfortable.
Ingrid and Isabel's BellaBand.
The BellaBand is a band you can wrap around your pre-pregnancy pants and jeans to disguise things like unbuttoned buttons, but still feel covered and comfy. What is so great about the BellaBand is that right about the time you hit your second trimester, your belly is growing, but sometimes the rest of your body isn't yet. The BellaBand transitions you into your second trimester clothing easily. It's also wonderful to use throughout your third trimester to hold too- loose maternity pants and jeans in place, and again, it's great for post-pregnancy use. I didn't utilize a BellaBand until my third pregnancy, and then you hardly ever saw me without it. The BellaBand is a must.
Secret Fit Belly jeans from Motherhood Maternity.
These jeans were my saving grace throughout my last trimesters. You need a good pair of jeans (and pants) while you're pregnant, regardless of the season. I scoured store after store for a comfortable and fashionable pair of jeans. The Secret Fit Bellys are amazing. The front panel is super soft, so you hardly feel like you're holding anything up, and the jeans hug your body in all the right places. When you're looking for a pair of maternity jeans or pants, you want to make sure your belly is comfy - nothing too tight or too loose, something that fits like a glove. The Secret Fit Bellys are the perfect combination of comfort and style, which means you can have it all.
