Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2010 Trendspotting: Viva La Legging!
Sometimes, I can be really, really stubborn. Usually it's a good thing, like when I insisted shortly after my daughter was born that we call the bottle companies to ask if there was BPA in the plastic. This was really before many people were buzzing about BPA - but now you hear about it everywhere. My pigheaded stubbornness paid off there, even when my daughter's pediatrician told me that I was crazy. Other times, it's not so helpful to be stubborn, like the time I brought 33 of my high school students to France and insisted that the bus was going to pick us up at a certain time based on the bus schedule. We waited for almost 2 hours before the bus arrived - it seems I was reading the wrong side of the schedule. Oops.
I'll admit another place where I was stubborn, but eventually had to admit that I was wrong. Leggings. When leggings started showing again up a few years ago, I was all "Nuh-uh. No way. Leggings need to go back to the 80's where they belong." Then I was more "ok, other people can wear them and I will try not to gag, but I won't be caught DEAD in a pair." Then it became something more like "Oh, those are kinda cute. I still refuse to wear them, but, oooooh - do those have cute little silver buttons on the side?"
I caved. I bought my first pair of leggings in August of 2009. Some people call them tights. I call them cute. (Now.)
Now I wear leggings so often, that friends have started to jokingly refer to them as "my uniform". I pair them with slouchy suede boots or studded ankle boots in the winter, and the footless leggings with gladiator sandals in the summer. I'm now addicted. I have a legging problem.
The lights of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week have officially dimmed, but one thing lingered with me from the fall collections. Leggings. They didn't go away. Oh no, they are back in almost every collection, but in all SORTS of variations. Here are some of the legwear trends that I spotted for Fall 2010.
LOVE: The hand-knit ombre tights with intricate eyelet detailing at Trias.
LOVE: The Tiger and Zebra Tights at Vivienne Tam.
LOVE: Bootcut leggings - yes, I said BOOTCUT LEGGINGS - at Nima.
LOVE: Tony Cohen wowed the Valentine's Day crowd with these silk jewel embroidered leggings. There was an audible gasp when the model stepped onto the runway.
LOVE: You can argue that these are pants, but I'm going with leggings based on the cut and fit. And yes, they are red velvet. (At Alexander Wang.)
What about you? Are you a leggings convert? Do you love them, hate them? No matter what you think, it seems this trend isn't going anywhere for quite a while. So get settled and grab yourself up a pair of embroidered leggings. You'll be glad you did.
