I first experienced New York City 's Fashion Week in September of 2000. I had just been hired by Donna Karan 3 weeks prior, and I started in her office in the throws of Fashion Week - quite literally. I was working 14 hour days in the office and running around this "new" City, trying to get everything and anything needed to make the Spring 2001 show a success. I remember seeing the models coming in to be fitted. I remember seeing the clothing being rushed around and making sure everything look runway ready. I remember the frenzy and the excitement. Celebrities RSVP'ing. Music being selected for the show. After parties being planned. It was a lot to take in being there only 21 days. Talk about a crash course in Fashion Week!
But what I remember most about that rainy Fall day in September - the day of the Donna Karan show - I was speechless seeing the models walk the runway in Donna Karan clothing. Speechless. Every single hair on my body was standing. I had goosebumps from head to toe. And my heart was racing. This is when I knew fashion was somehow, some way, in my blood. The rush and excitement and surge of energy I got from watching the Spring 2001 Collection walk the runway was incredible. To be there for just 21 days, and to see and feel and know (on a small scale) the time and effort and heart and soul that went into each look is something that just changed me. And my respect for Donna Karan and every single member of her team just skyrocketed.
I was at that show as an employee of Donna Karan, and I was fortunate enough to attend additional shows as I worked at Donna Karan International. Imagine the shows as something like a graduation... 2 times a year, you create, create, create... and then say good-bye to this amazing collection. It's incredible.
Fast forward to today. Here I am a fashion and mom blogger. I blog every single day, giving fashion advice to mothers. It's what I know. It's what I love. And the merging of these two worlds is incredible to be able to do. As I have announced previously, I have become the co-editor of Lifetime Moms Beauty and Style Channel. Well, Lifetime is sending me (and my co-editor, Erika) to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week - Spring 2010!
Can you hear me doing the happy-fashion-dance from where you are!?
Excited? I'm BEYOND excited!
I cannot wait to be in NYC and report back the top Spring 2010 trends and styles. As a fashion lover, I can't wait to see the beauty and energy and life in each designer's collection. As a woman, I'm thrilled to be able to see what will be in, and what will be out. As a mother, I'm excited to see what I can interpret into my everyday life and still feel chic and trendy and fashionable.
For me, this is a full circle moment. Reporting at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. I am excited to be able to share with moms what we can do to keep ourselves fashion-forward and in-style. Stay tuned...
