Yesterday was the final day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and everywhere I looked it seemed clear that things were wrapping up. I grabbed my last McCafe from the lobby of the tents and waited with Audrey for Isaac Mizrahi's show to begin. The folks at American Express had kindly invited us up to visit the American Express Skybox - providing us with a special, birds-eye view of the show. We breezed past the line and up to the exclusive lounge with comfy chairs, delicious food, and our very own bar. Well, ok, we had to share all of this with the other 25 people in the Skybox, but we still felt pretty darn special! The Skybox is exclusively offered to American Express cardholders, who can buy show "packages" to immerse themselves in Mercedes-Benz Fashion week without dealing with the hassles of invitation and lines. In other words, the cool kids get a rockin' view!
After swooning over the Skybox itself (did I mention how celebrity-like I was feeling, breezing past everyone to walk into this exclusive lounge? I may have ruined the effect a little, what with my iPhone, Flip Camera, and digital camera all in hand, snapping picutres and taking footage at every turn!), we turned our attention to the runway. While I have attended close to 10 shows this week, it immediately stood out that Isaac Mizrahi had the only live band of the week - playing a fun and whimsical little jazz number as models began to appear in truly stunning clothing. I have no better word to describe it - the show was just FUN.
There was even a bit of rain in the show, and a stage hand immediately hopped up with an umbrella to help the model walk through without messing up her hair. The models did not walk a straight runway, they weaved and turned around various obstacles, including large soundstage-like lights. Looking out over the crowd I could easily see that I was not the only one delighted by the show - everyone was smiling and laughing.
Where was I? Oh! The clothes. The clothes were gorgeous, yet, dare I say, practical. Several separate, body-conscious pieces came together with large accessories, ruffles, and flowers. A classic look with a twist, if you will. There were pops of color, but, as I've noticed throughout the week, a lot of designers, including Mizrahi, stuck to a very neutral, clean palette with a few surprising dashes of color. Lightweight fabrics were also prevalent, silk crepe tops, wisps of chiffon and tulle - that gave some of Mizrahi's almost masculine pieces a feminine twist.
I have a bunch of great video from the show that I will be posting here soon, but for now I have to pack up my room (did a tornado hit here last night?) and hop on a plane home. Stay tuned for my wrap-up of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week!
