Sometimes I'm a Frumpy Mom, and I'm OK With That
Do you ever look in the mirror and say to yourself, “Man I look a little frumpy!” I do, and I’m not saying I feel that way everyday, but there are days where I just am. How did this happen? I think we can all look fab if we want to, but I think now that I’m a mom, I’m more limited on time and my priorities have shifted a bit. And while I love getting ready and looking good I just don’t spend as much time on my appearance every day.
Looking good takes work. Who has time each morning to get ready like I did before kids? I used to spend at least an hour showering, blow drying my hair, putting on make up, coordinating my outfit, picking out accessories, even putting on perfume as I got ready for work.
Now that I’m a mom and only work part-time, some days I get ready for work, others I spend all day in my yoga pants, and I like it. And when my kids were babies, who wanted to get all dressed up and then end up with spit up or food all over myself. Even now that my kids are toddlers I still end the day with some sort of stain or stains on myself.
I’m not sure exactly how this frumpy evolution started, but reflecting back on the last few years I think it first began when I was pregnant and started wearing flats. I didn’t even own a pair then. I only wore flat shoes if I was working out. I loved heels. At first flats felt weird, especially when my jeans started dragging on the floor. But even then I liked looking cute when I was pregnant. I bought new shirts for my new belly. I had time to blow dry my hair.
Then I had my first and sleep was way more of a priority than looking good. Stretchy pants, nursing bra, loose fitting t-shirts and a ponytail became my mom uniform. Then came my second. Juggling a toddler, while pregnant didn’t exactly leave me want to invest in a new wardrobe, so I stayed with my uniform.
So I’m not saying you shouldn’t look fab, I think it’s important to spend some time on you. Get a new outfit, experiment with new make-up, curl your hair! Now that my kids are 3 and 2 I do spend more time on myself. I love getting dressed up and ready for work, date nights or girls night out. It’s just now I know why I’m frumpy sometimes and I’m okay with that!
So when you’re feeling a little frumpy with your wet hair, no makeup, mom uniform and you see all the glam celebrities in the magazines, or someone all dolled up on the street don’t be so hard on yourself. Remember you are fab too, maybe just not right now and it’s okay!
