What to Wear On Your Feet When You're Traveling
When I was a little girl, every single June (as soon as school was let out), my parents took me, my sister and 2 brothers to Washington D.C. I'll be honest, there were years we all went kicking and screaming. When most of our friends were going to Myrtle Beach and Disney when school was out, our parents were taking us on an educational trip to D.C. (oh, yes… life wasn't fair when I was in middle school!). And not only that, my parents (both whom were teachers) always had a plan as to what we were going to see, which involved museum and monument tours. We would walk for hours and hours, that's pretty much what I remember a lot about those trips. ;)
What I didn't realize then, but obviously do now… my parents were creating some pretty incredible memories for me and my sister and brothers. How fun is it now to look back and say, "Oh, Jane - do you remember when Dad wore that silly headband because it was so hot?" Or… "Oh, Adam and Keith, what were you thinking wearing your socks up that high?" It genuinely warms my heart to look back and smile, laugh and giggle at the memories of all those years and trips to Washington D.C.
So there was only one acceptable thing to do with my own sons… start the Washington D.C. tradition. Which we just got back from! Ironically enough, my husband's mom and dad took him and his 2 sisters on the same D.C. trips as children, so we were armed, loaded and ready to rock and roll our D.C. trip. We had tourist books bought, itineraries drafted and to-do lists laid out… oh, man… we are our parents!
Our trip was INCREDIBLE. We had the time of our life with the boys! Believe it or not, we went to everything we wanted to go to (well, except the National Zoo… so that will be for next year). The boys were troopers walking to every single monument and museum (we forgot the strollers). And they truly did soak up quite a bit of information about America while we were there, which was very cool to see (William was mesmerized by everything).
Which brings me to the point of this fashionable post. I did a big fashion no-no, something I stress over and over to never, ever do on my own blog… and I, away in Washington D.C. was the biggest offender.
I dressed for fashion, not for comfort while away.
With the summer fast approaching, trips will be planned by a majority of us. Depending upon where you're heading, I can pretty much guarantee some walking will be done and necessary. Especially traveling with kids, it's even more important to make sure the shoes we pack are comfortable and easy to get around in (you may be chasing little ones). Well, let me pass on this vital information… make sure you have shoes that are COMFORTABLE and meant for walking, not just for "show."
I was so excited packing for the trip and bringing shorts and cute tees and tanks… it's sill a bit chilly in Rhode Island, so when I hear the weather is shorts and tee weather, I'm ALL about it. When it came to shoes, I tossed in a brand new pair of stripy flat sandals I just bought. I figured, they're flat… these will be perfect.
Wrong. Oh, how very, very wrong.
These were the sandals I made the mistake of packing…
As cute as they are, my feet and ankles are KILLING me. I should have worn sneakers or some sandals that are designed/meant for walking. So let me pass along 5 pairs of shoes I recommend buying and packing before your next trip. I promise you… it doesn't pay to look cute, I'm paying the price!
