Wrapping Up Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is over. Fashion is NYC and NYC is fashion, so it's bittersweet seeing the tent lights go out at Bryant Park. Spring 2010 is all about fun, flirty and (quite honestly) wearable fashions. From bold and bright colors to neutral color palettes. From silk fabrics to a feminine twist on the power suit. From short minis to lots of leggings. Spring 2010 fashion will guarantee happiness and energy and color and vibrance... and there will be something for everyone, I promise.
I got to spend the day with some wildly creative and powerful forces in the fashion world -- Norma Kamali, Isaac Mizrahi and Project Runway's Season 6 designers.
Norma Kamali's show was downtown at the Apple Store on Prince Street.
Norma Kamali (a self-proclaimed "Apple-holic") is bringing affordable fashion to a broader reach of people using technology to "democratize fashions." By taking advantage of the iPhone, iPhone Applications and Apple technologies, Norma Kamali is truly interacting with her customers on a personal and intimate basis - something not done by many designers yet. By utlizing Skype, Norma Kamali has created a "Try Before You Buy" policy, where you can try clothing for 48 hours without purchasing. For a mother, this is an amazing opportunity to take advantage of... we don't always have the time or the energy to head into a dressing room and try on items of clothing, so this is KEY. I absolutely loved seeing Norma Kamali's SPRING 2010 Collection and hearing her speak about what inspires her. She wants to know her customer and connect with her on such a personal level, and it's so refreshing and special to see. Her clothing for Spring 2010 is a sea of reds and grays and creams, gorgeous fashions, all available at affordable prices. As Norma told us yesterday, "Your wardrobe is an opportunity to create new ideas and styles, just by adding 1 piece." She also just launched her own game on ROIWorld.com where you can actually play dress-up with Norma herself and with her latest Collection. So much fun, and so amazing!
Isaac's show was a little bit different than the "average" runway show. I got to watch this one in true style - from the American Express Sky Box - above the runway. It was so cool to be up there and see the clothing at such a different vantage point. In true Isaac style, his creations where colorful and fun and wearable off the runway. He really infused lots of pinks and purples in his Collection, making sure that there was something for everyone -- skirts, dresses, shorts and pants. His show was just plain FUN! He had a section of "rain" coming down during the show, and a "handler" escorting some of the models through the rain with an umbrella. And he even used a golf cart as a prop during the show -- a golf cart that actually moved and drove down the runway. There's nothing like watching an amazing Collection while having some excitement and seeing a true "show" before your very eyes. Isaac's Collection was one of my favorites to see. He just knows how to create and design for the modern woman.
And then... (drum roll please!).... on to the Project Runway Season 6 Premiere Party at the Hearst Building.
Lifetime and Marie Claire decided to have the Premiere Party during Fashion Week because what else speaks to NYC and fashion than Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week? I'm a HUGE lover of the show, so being able to be at the party, see the "winning" garments displayed... meet and take photos with the contestants... and just be among these amazingly-creative designers was such an incredible TREAT! When I tell you that this group of men and women were incredibly gracious and friendly... they were. They wanted to meet people. They wanted to hear you love the show. They wanted to hear who your favorites were. I got to enjoy a private screening with them of last night's episode. The cool part was that they all knew who got sent home, but they didn't let on. (Nobody would tell me who won!) They all laughed together and truly enjoyed watching the show as an ensemble. It was one of those pinch-me moments to be there and enjoying my favorite show with the cast!
I have my final video diary of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week that I will be posting... so stay TUNED! Lots of GREAT footage!
