Call Me an All Star and a Punk Look for Moms
It’s that time again…”Project Runway All Stars” is back! I know you’re all as pumped about season 3 as I am! And this season there’s a new host…Alyssa Milano has taken over the hosting duties this go around. Did anyone REALLY want to look like her growing up? Come to think of it…I wouldn’t mind it now. Haha! For a forty year old mama, she looks flat out amazing. Who am I kidding? For a woman ANY age she looks incredible. Her skin is flawless no? I wonder what her secret is? Perhaps she uses Mary Kay products? Mary Kay is the All Stars makeup sponsor this year and will be creating the models’ runway faces. Hmmmmm. Hey Alyssa, if you’re reading this…inquiring minds want to know how a busy mother like yourself looks so fabulous…but I digress.
We first see the designers as they’re headed to meet up with Ms. Milano in Bryant Park…and it was there that they learned this season has a twist. Of course there’s a twist. It’s “Project Runway” after all. Joining some of my favorites from past seasons like Victor Luna, Korto Momulu and Christopher Palu from season 10, are a few Project Runway WINNERS. Yep, even winners are getting another shot this time. Jeffrey Sebelia, Irina Shabayeva and Seth Aaron Henderson are in the house and the other designers aren’t overly excited about it. Also in the mix are Elena Slivnyak and Melissa Fleis from season 10. Season 10 is really representing. They will all be competing for the over $750,000 prize package. As far as the mentor goes…It’s Marie Claire senior fashion editor Zanna Roberts Rossi. She’s less warm and fuzzy than Joanna Coles, but she clearly knows her stuff.
This season’s first challenge was punk rock themed and inspired by the punk princess herself…Debbie Harry from Blondie! Before the designers tackled their punk filled task, they were told they were going to Mood and not leaving. They had to design and create their garments right inside the store. No workroom…No designers’ lounge to chill in…just tight quarters and no rest. Welcome to All Stars y’all! It looked, in a word, challenging, but they made it work and come runway time, everyone had a completed look.
Leather was there in spades and my favorite use of it was in Seth Aaron’s killer white leather jacket. That bad boy is welcome to GET IN MY CLOSET! Elena also created an awesome leather jacket that she styled backwards thanks to a suggestion from her model. On the opposite end of the spectrum was Jeffrey’s use of cascading tulle. The high/low skirt and open back animal print jacket was feminine and punk at the same time. In the end, Elena took the win and, as such, her jacket will be gracing Debbie Harry’s oh so cool bod.
Seeing as this is “All Stars”, it wasn’t too surprising that the judges didn’t really dislike anyone’s look. Viktor Luna and Ari’s designs were deemed too safe though and Ari was sent home.
I must say, this season really started with a bang. I was quite impressed with many of the looks and can’t wait to see what else the designers have in store for us! I, of course, went for a punk(ish) look when I styled my episode inspired ensemble. Seeing as I’m not a punk rocker twenty something, if I’m going to be rockin’ an outfit with a punk edge to it, I want to insert a little prettiness into the look. A beautiful bold lip, like one that can be created from Mary Kay’s True Dimension lipstick in Mystic Plum, is perfect for fall and decidedly feminine.
