Fly Like a Butterfly and a Mixed Prints Look for Moms
You can always tell when the end is coming on “Project Runway”, because the breakdowns and freak outs tend to become more frequent. This season, it’s Helen who seems to be really feeling the pressure as we near the finale. For the second week in a row Helen got inside her own and head and had to be drawn out of the “bad place” as Tim Gun referred to it, that she was in…but more on that later.
The latest challenge turned out to be the dreaded avant-garde challenge. The avant-garde challenge usually has the designers super psyched or scared to death. Either way, it often leads to a brutal critique…This time, however, the judges were pretty kind. They had minor critiques and, for the most part, loved what the designers presented. They really did bring their A game this time!
Said designers used butterflies as their inspiration and a couple of them hopped right to creating amazingly creative garments. It wasn’t long before you could see who the front runners were. I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t surprised that Dom and Bradon had very clear visions for their avant-garde looks. What WAS a surprise was when the designers had to use garments that eliminated designers had lost with and transform them to create a second look. I love that Project Runway can still surprise me after all these years!
When it came time to walk the runway, two of my favorites knocked it out of the park. I feel like I’ve been talking about the same three designers…Helen, Dom and Bradon a LOT lately…They all seem to end up on my favorite lists week after week. Helen’s looks weren’t necessarily my favorites this week, but overall, I think she’s been incredibly strong. And I was totally with the judges on Dom and Bradon. All four of their looks were spectacular! Dom managed to turn Jeremy’s old matronly jacket and skirt combo into something downright COOL and Bradon had it right when he said that Dom’s mixed prints belonged on a runway in Paris. I don’t even know if I would have been able to pick a winner, because Bradon’s white confection of a gown was so deliciously beautiful, it gave me chills. Did anyone else dig his model’s hair? I love a good beehive! Just sayin’.
As for the winner, I don’t know how they ended up choosing one…but it was Bradon. As was expected, Dom was sent on to the finale as well. And then there were three….Justin, Helen and Alexandria were pumped when they found out that they all would get to create a collection for fashion week and the judges would award one of them with the final seat in the finale. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
Mixed prints will forever be a favorite look of mine, so I had to use Dom as my inspiration designer for this week’s outfit! If you’re nervous about mixing prints, try pairing a smaller scale print with a larger one, so they complement each other instead of competing with each other!
