It’s Elementary and a Sultry Look for Moms
After watching “Project Runway” for many moons now, I’ve become pretty good at predicting what the challenges are going to be. When a school bus picked up the designers in the latest All Stars episode, I thought for sure they were going to have to design children’s clothes. Color me wrong. Alyssa Milano threw something a wee bit tougher at them.
After the bus dropped them off at a New York City elementary school, the designers found out that the challenge was an unconventional materials challenge. They had to create a high impact runway look with the materials that they had four minutes to fill a backpack with. The mad dash that they made for the classroom housing their materials was nothing short of hilarious!
The unconventional challenges have traditionally gone one of two ways…They have produced really good garments or pretty bad ones. There hasn’t been much in between. That didn’t change with this particular unconventional challenge. Christopher, for instance, was very focused from the get-go. Inspired by the bullying he experienced as a child, he was driven to design a look which represented that struggle. The dress that resulted from that inspiration was truly beautiful…dark, but beautiful.
Viktor Luna also had no trouble getting down to business either. After having a conversation with Elena, he used a bunch of rubber rulers to create a super cool effect. Christopher raised a good point about that convo…Was Elena offering up advice or simply spit balling her own ideas? Hmmmmm…Regardless of how she meant it, Viktor Luna ran with the idea and created a gorgeous garment.
Speaking of Elena…You know we couldn’t make it through of an episode without seeing a bit of a meltdown from her. It’s crazy how upset she gets over every challenge, yet she always does amazingly well in the end. When she sent down her structured dress with unique, yet Madonna reminiscent cups, the judges ate it up. They did mention, however, that they were concerned about her being a one trick pony. It will be interesting to see how she responds to that in coming challenges.
So, now that we’ve talked about some of the successes, let’s touch on the less than successful. Poor Michael simply ran out of time and while the judges appreciated the color palette, his look literally fell apart on the runway. I know I wasn’t the only one cringing for him. And then there was Jeffrey. His model’s private bits and pieces literally hung out. Georgina was not down with that. Not one little bit. Haha! Rounding out the bottom three was Korto who also struggled with time and thus presented a look she was far from happy with. The judges actually couldn’t decide who was the worst, so they kept everyone.
Did I mention that this challenge had a twist? This time it wasn’t a trick that resulted in more work for the weary designers, but one that helped them. They received consultations with two celebrity makeup artists and use of Mary Kay’s At Play line, which further inspired them. The winner of the challenge will appear in a Mary Kay ad in Marie Claire. Who will we be seeing in said ad do you ask? Christopher will be gracing those pages! A well deserved win in this girl’s opinion. And on that note…
Christopher’s dark and stormy look inspired this week’s outfit! I decided to build my look around a little black dress and Mary Kay At Play™ Jelly Lip Gloss in Crushed Plum, which produces a sultry look.
