It’s Time to Get Real & a Dressed Up Look for Moms
I always love seeing how the designers react when they’re faced with the prospect of designing for “real” bodies. In seasons past, for some, the thought of having to create a garment for anything other than a sample sized figure filled them with dread, while others embraced the “challenge” of dressing a real bod!
This season, with last week’s makeover challenge, it was more of the latter than the former. Only Ken seemed to be a bit weary of the “realness” of his model, but in the end he went with it and, against his better judgment, kept his client’s wish list a priority when he designed the garment. His client just so happened to be a “Project Runway” super fan. In fact, every designer got to dress a woman who LOVES Project Runway to the moon and back. This meant that they were REALLY into the challenge and had lots of ideas, many of them stemming from what they thought the judges were looking for. Let’s just say that the designers had their work cut out for them.
Speaking of Ken…the episode kicked off with some major drama involving him and Alexander. After refusing to move out of the way for Alexander when he was blocking the door, Ken threw an epic fit when Alexander pushed past him hurling an iron in the process. I can see why they were both annoyed. Ken should have moved and Alexander shouldn’t have thrown stuff. This was just another example of how the pressure can build up and take over. Tim Gunn, in his oh so eloquent way, swooped in and smoothed over the situation, so the designers could get back to the business of designing…And it’s a good thing that Ken had the opportunity to apologize because it ended up being his time to leave the show. Although, he did really listen to his client, the look just didn’t impress the judges.
Considering a major makeover was the goal, some designers had it easier than others when it came to making an impact. Helen’s super fan, for instance, a shy kinda gal with UBER long hair and a tall, trim figure, made the design process somewhat easier…Chopping her mane off was an instant makeover on its own. And she looked simply stunning in the red carpet worthy strapless dress that Helen made for her. It was no surprise when she took the win…the transformation really was amazing!
Inspired by Helen’s use of navy, I styled a dressed up look for you featuring a smokin’ navy dress!
