It Takes Two and a Pinkalicious Look for Moms
If you had asked me to predict the outcome of last week’s “Project Runway” episode, I couldn’t have done it. Not because what happened on the runway was so out of the ordinary, but because of the designers involved. Yes, I said designers, plural not singular! Let’s start at the beginning…
After last week’s dramatics, I thought for sure that this episode would be decidedly calmer. I mean there can’t be hold your breath moments all the time can there? Color me wrong. This latest challenge was the HP Intel design challenge where the designers were asked to create their own textile design. As a component of the challenge ,they were paired off with Next Generation Innovators like a pastry chef, a pro BMX rider, Miss USA and a 17 year old non-profit founder. They were tasked to use their muses as inspiration and design a custom print.
Obviously, Dom was licking her lips over this one. Prints are definitely her thing, so it was no surprise when her textile came to life and was, of course, fabulous. On the flip side, Alexander had immediate trepidation over his pastry chef muse. He had no idea what to do with cakes…I don’t know about you, but cake inspires me plenty. Haha!
All I can say is, seeing how over the moon Dom was and how terrified Alexander was made for some serious foreshadowing…A couple of other red flags were raised when Kate and Justin’s quests to prove themselves were highlighted. Unfortunately, when designers set out to show the judges that they CAN do something, it often ends unpleasantly. And that’s just what happened. Kate went back to her roots and made a dress she hoped would knock Helen down off the number one platform , while Justin designed a gown that he hoped would prove to the judges just how capable he was of creating a beautiful garment. Despite their confidence, they both ended up in the bottom three with Alexander…Justin lucked out and was sent on to the next round, but Alexander and Kate were sent packing. Was anyone else surprised that Kate was eliminated? We knew a double elimination was probably coming thanks to the designers worrying about the number of people that were left this far in the competition at the beginning of the episode, but I certainly didn’t think it would be Kate. Not because her look wasn’t elimination worthy, but simply because she had created such beautiful pieces in previous challenges. The judges typically consider a designer’s work as a whole, but not this time.
Someone who wasn’t brimming with confidence was the judges’ favorite child Helen. She ended up hating her print and had a bit of a meltdown over it. Tim, in his oh so calming way, talked her off the ledge and she got back to work. What resulted from all that work was a pretty cool two piece crop top and skirt ensemble that the judges dug, but not quite enough to displace Dom as the winner. Joining them in the top was Bradon with a smokin’ LBD/printed jacket combo. I think I would have named him the winner had it been my choice, but Dom’s black, white and HOT pink color palette DID speak to me, so I used it as my inspiration for this week’s styled look.
