Make It Work and a Fall-Ready Look for Moms
So, an athletic wear themed challenge should be a piece of cake right? Haha. In fashion, what you think should be the easiest thing can actually turn out to be quite daunting. On the latest “Project Runway”, the designers were asked to compete in Field Day like challenges and then design a garment fit for exercise that would be in line with Heidi Klum’s existing New Balance designs.
Trying to make activewear fashion forward was no easy feat. Some of designers managed to work quite well with the delicate balance between form and function, while others seemed to focus on function alone. Oh and did I mention there was a freak out? Yeah….there was an epic freak out courtesy of Ken.
So, everyone was going about their business trying to work with their stretchy fabrics, which is apparently a pain in the you know what according to the eliminated designer that I interviewed, when Helen rubbed Ken the wrong way...What resulted was another in your face kinda confrontation a la Sandro. I think the pressure of being on the show had been boiling up in Ken and when Helen ticked him off just enough, said pressure boiled over. Eventually, he recognized that he overreacted and apologized. No running off into the night for Ken.
After that little tiff was over and the looks started to take shape, I thought a clear winner was emerging. Kate’s color combo was eye catching, the jacket was super comfy looking, not to mention flattering, and I loved the in your face red that comprised the bottom of the pants. They were much more interesting than my typical workout pants! Just sayin.’ While the judges did appreciate Kate’s design, they ultimately gave Helen the win for a floaty black jacket that was definitely pretty, but if I were wearing it as part of a workout ensemble, I would prefer it didn’t highlight the crotch area quite so much. Am I alone? When I’m at the gym, I want to throw on a jacket afterward so I’m semi decent when I go out in public. In the spirit of decency, Helen’s jacket was cut a smidge to high pour moi. Ha!
Don’t get me wrong…I definitely thought Helen’s jacket was cool, but as far as an activewear challenge goes, I would have gone with Kate, but that’s just me. Plus, the entire look was awesome…versus just the jacket…And actually, Karen, the unlucky released designer, agreed.
When I had the chance to speak with her about Helen’s look she said, “I think her jacket was amazing. They had said that they were judging based on a winning look. I think if they were judging in terms of an actual 2 or 3 piece look then it would have been someone different.” I then asked her if she thought it would have been Kate and she said, “I think it could have been Kate. Kate’s look was incredible as well.” Unfortunately for Karen, her time on “Project Runway” is over, but she did take away some great lessons that I think would serve the remaining designers well. She had this to offer…“Things that I've learned from being on the show…At the end of the day listen to your gut. Don't only take in the negative feedback that you hear. Don't take that to heart. If you fall down, pick yourself back up.” Basically, stay out of your own head and be true to yourself! We could all stand to take that advice.
Kate’s scarlet and smoke color palette inspired this week’s look…I actually didn’t style an activewear look because Kate’s was just too cool for school to try to emulate, but I did put together a fall-ready ensemble with those hues. Who’s ready to bust out their boots and a bit of leather? You know this girl is! Viva la fall!
