Heidi Klum Bribes Her Kids To Eat Healthy---Should You?
Like most moms, I’ve long struggled to get my kids to eat healthy food. I’ve tried reasoning with them, pleading with them and I’ve even attempted the ol' “hide the broccoli in the brownies” trick. But as desperate as I’ve sometimes been to get just one piece of greenery in their little mouths, the one thing I’ve never resorted to is bribery. Unlike Heidi Klum.
The German supermodel has recently been in the news in regards to an interview she gave to the Daily Mail where she admitted that she pays her children a dollar if they finish their morning smoothies. “Some of my kids don't love it, so I decided I would pay them a dollar if they finish their drink. All of the money goes into their piggy banks, they have collected a bunch of money since January 1. What's good for them is good for me as well,” she said.
I definitely applaud her honesty and fully believe that she can do whatever she wants with her own kids. However, is bribery a good idea when it comes to nutrition? Or is that sending kids the wrong message?
Of course, in an ideal world, parents would teach their children the old adage “you are what you eat” and help them understand how important good food is to their health. Then the kids would nod wisely and go on to gobble up their fruits and vegetables because it’s the right thing to do.
But since we don’t live in an ideal world and instead live in a world where some kids act like eating a carrot is a fate worse than death, maybe it’s okay for parents to just do whatever it takes to get vitamins into their children. At least until the kids get a little older and a little less picky. And a bribe of a dollar is at least a little better than giving your kid sugar as a reward like some other parents I’ve heard about. (Or putting sugar on the vegetables, which I've also heard about. Yuck.)
I don't know what the right approach is, but I do know this: if Heidi ever served my kids breakfast, they’d immediately figure out that the fastest way to build their bank accounts is to tell her they hate her smoothies.
