I Don't Do New Year's Resolutions. Here's Why!
I don't do New Year's resolutions. What I do do, however, is New Year's Purges. And I have started out 2014 by overhauling the terrifying, never-ending black pit that is my...JUNK DRAWER. (Everyone has one of these miscellaneous, bottomless drawers, right? Or is that just something in my family?)
When I took everything out, it was rather astounding what was contained in such a small space.
Here's what I found:
*3 expired coupons for Bed, Bath & Beyond (luckily, I was told that BB&B will honor them! LOVE that.)
*4 packages of orange-flavored Tic Tacs
*1 package of Skittles, half-eaten. (I'd been using a handful of these to bribe my daughter to eat a "good" dinner...which I know sort of defeats the purpose...)
*12 leftover striped napkins from my daughter's birthday party
*3 travel-sized packets of Tylenol
*5 pairs of headphones, only one of which wasn't somehow broken or damaged
*2 boxes of Band-Aids--a mash-up of ones emblazoned with the faces of Mickey Mouse, Curious George and Dora.
*2 lanyards from some conference or other (my husband's, most likely)
*one pocket-sized measuring tape (I'd been looking for that for weeks!)
*5 pairs of colorful, sparkly, plastic sunglasses to fit my toddler's face (all gotten in various birthday party goodie bags, and all PRECIOUS to aforementioned toddler)
*2 pairs of my sunglasses
*3 key chains with no keys
*4 magic markers
*1 mini-pen attached to a key chain
*6 sheets of stickers, to be used as rewards for toddler upon good behavior
*1 bottle of vitamin D supplements
*4 hair elastics
*8 bobby pins
And that's just what was in the junk drawer we keep separate from the drawer that contains batteries, flashlights, masking tape and other more 'utilitarian' items!
All in all, it's a pretty clear indication that I live in a house with a young child and that I like to hold on to things. While I have to admit that this year's purge didn't result in me throwing away all that much, I did move some items back to their proper homes (i.e. hair ties went to the bathroom, Tylenol and vitamins went out of reach, etc.) After all, I just may need those forlorn lanyards or half-dried-up magic markers....right?
I'm curious what other people stash in their junk drawers? Do you try to keep it neat or just go for the chaos approach—if only for that one drawer?
