Is This Photo Of Jessica Simpson's Daughter In a Bikini Offensive?
Jessica Simpson has been causing some major buzz lately…and it’s not just because of her post-pregnancy body or her Weight Watchers deal. The entertainer shared an adorable photo on Katie Couric’s new talk show “Katie” of her four-month-old daughter, Maxwell, wearing a yellow knit bikini. Soon after the show was broadcast, she drew criticism from some parenting groups regarding the picture.
“It is very disturbing to see a young baby presented to the world wearing a bikini,” Claude Knights, the director of Kidscape, a British child welfare agency, told the UK’s Daily Mail, (who ran the image). “Celebrity choices carry great influence, as can be seen by the manner in which their accessories and behaviors are copied widely. It is to be hoped that parents will understand that 'baby bikinis' are totally inappropriate, and that they contribute to the sexualization and commercialization of childhood. We should not be compromising the sanctity of our children’s early years.”
Can’t a new mom just have some fun dressing up her baby and showing off with some really cute photos? Is it any different than showing photos of a baby in the bath or in diaper?
