Snooki Offers Parenting Advice to Kate Middleton: WTF?!
Before I gave birth to my darling son Jonah 5 years ago, I was flooded with advice from loving friends and family about parenthood. I got advice on just about everything… from how to swaddle an infant (I never mastered this), to how to use a breast pump and talk on the phone and cook at the same time (add that to the list of never mastered), to which sound machines really helped with sleep (add THAT to the list of NONE of them worked and he's still a lousy sleeper)…
In addition to friends and (lots of Jewish) family, thanks to a very popular and highly sought after Mommy & Me class, I was lucky to enter mommyhood with a big support network and a hefty list of do's and don'ts. The one thing I will forever feel like was missing though was a little reassurance… a little honesty… a little truth. Sure, everyone had a ton of advice but no one ever said "hey, sometimes it can be overwhelming," or "hey, your nipples will actually peel off at a certain point when you start breastfeeding…." Were they scared that I'd find out the truth and thereby never have children again and thereby never be a part of their "club," thereby leaving them alone and playdate-less??? At times, I swear I thought it was a conspiracy. The "no one ever told me…" list seemed endless.
When I read that The Princess of Jersey Shore, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi tried to impart some mommy wisdom on The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate "Naturally Tan" Middleton, the days of pregnancy/early mommy-hood advice came flooding back to me. Snooki, mom to little Lorenzo, born in August, shared her advice to "Shnooks" via the New York Daily News:
"It’s hard, but don’t stress out… Enjoy your pregnancy and be excited… Enjoy your time at home with the baby."
Word up, Shnooks. Word, mother effin' up.
Initially, the "Snooki Offers Duchess Parenting Advice" headline made me laugh, but the more I think about it, the more I'm okay with it. Sure… They're about the two most polar opposite humans in the world. Snooki gets drunk and arrested after too many hurricanes (the drink - not the storm) on the Jersey Shore boardwalk, and Kate Middleton gets arm cramps and lock jaw after waving regally to adoring fans outside of Buckingham Palace. One will sit on the royal throne... one has thrown UP on the "royal throne." As opposite as they come.
But at the end of the day, motherhood is motherhood… And new motherhood, like Snickerdoodle said, is sometimes hard. She's not claiming to be an expert (nor am I), she's just offering Kate some girl to girl advice.
The part about staying home… well…. She should have said, enjoy staying at one of your many HOMES with one of your many nannies, but whatevs. I guess the Jersey girl was just keepin' it real. And when it comes to advice and mommy-hood, that's really what it's all about anyway….
