Why I’m Annoyed Jessica Simpson Gave Her Daughter a Boy’s Name
I feel sorry for Jessica Simpson’s baby—and not just because the baby has to grow up with Jessica Simpson as a mom. No, I primarily feel sorry for her newborn because little Maxwell Drew will have to go through life clarifying that, despite the masculine name, she is indeed a girl.
But Maxwell will not be alone. She will be frustrated alongside a slew of little ladies being born today to parents who think it’s trendy to bring boy names over to the girls’ side.
How do I know these girls will suffer because of their parents’ gender-bending choices? Because I was once in baby Maxwell’s Louboutins, and I know how hard it can be to grow up with a boy’s name. (Yes, I have no doubt Jessica Simpson’s daughter already wears tiny designer shoes.)
Although my first name is decidedly feminine, I was called PJ before I was even born and the nickname stuck. Family, friends, teachers…everybody called me PJ. On more than one occasion when I was a kid, I was grouped with the boys during school or extracurricular activities by advisors who didn’t know me personally and were simply reading my name off a roster. Even now, I’ve had clients confess that, in the beginning of our working relationships, they assumed I was a guy because my email signature was simply PJ Feinstein.
Let me tell you, constantly correcting people gets old. But it’s too late for me to ditch the nickname.
I suppose Maxwell could be called the more girlie Maxie, although I’ll never understand why parents (including my own) would choose to give their child one name but call them by another. Maxwell could go by her middle name except that Drew doesn’t really skew more feminine. It may be Drew Barrymore’s moniker, but I bet that there are far more boys named Drew than girls. If Jessica Simpson had named her baby Maxwell Elizabeth, for example, at least it would be clearer that she was a girl.
To me, Maxwell Drew is a terrific hipster name for a boy but a really bizarre choice for a girl. What do you think?
