I'm very honored to be Lifetime Moms' first dad blogger. I live with my boyfriend, Drew – no, we’re not married – and our twins Bennett and Sutton, who were born in August 2009. They were conceived via gestational surrogate, with eggs provided by Drew’s sister, Susie. (Yes, I provided the sperm… which I add not because I enjoy talking about my sperm with complete strangers, but because some people will wonder… and what must those people think?)
If any of this is confusing or makes you uncomfortable, then please read my blog, Mommy Man: Adventures of a Gay Superdad, for further detail. I promise that once you get to know us, our family makes perfect sense.
These days, I'm lucky enough to stay home raising the kids. It's been the most rewarding job I've ever had, and I'm proud to say that after three years of doing this, I am completely desensitized to poopy.
Q: How many children do you have?
A: I have three-year-old twins, a boy and a girl.
Q: Where do you live?
A: I seem to bounce back and forth between the East and West coasts every couple of decades. I grew up in New Jersey, and I couldn't wait to get out. I moved to Los Angeles right out of college and lived there for 18 years. Once I had kids, I decided that I wanted their childhood to be more like mine, and I schlepped back to the New York 'burbs. At this rate, I'll be retiring in San Diego.
Q: What’s your astrological sign?
Q: If your life was made into a Lifetime Movie, what would it be called?
A: "Where Do Gaybies Come From?: The Jerry Mahoney Story"
Q: What is one of your favorite quotes?
A: In our house, we say, "Save the drama for President Obama."
Q: What TV or movie character are you most like?
A: I'm a combination of the two straight dads on "Modern Family". I'm goofy and enthusiastic like Phil. When my kids say they want to jump from the Lay-Z-Boy to the couch, I say, "That sounds cool!" At the same time, I can be grizzled and practical like Jay. While the kids are jumping, I'll stay close enough to save them from breaking their necks. As for Mitchell and Cameron, they're pushovers. I'd love to grab a cosmo with them, but I wouldn't want them in my playgroup.
Q: If you could have dinner with three famous people (dead or alive), who would you invite?
A: Parker Posey, because she is delightful. Dan Savage, because we'd have a lot to talk about. And Mark Zuckerberg, because I'd let him pick up the check.
Q: What is your biggest vice?
A: I wouldn't want my kids to know how much junk food I eat. I try to limit theirs, but while they're napping, I shove my face full of chocolate chip cookies.
Q: What makes you feel sexy?
A: Lots and lots of alcohol and/or being whalloped with a blunt object.
Q: What’s your most memorable ballsy moment?
A: Writing my name on the "Mother" line on my kids' birth certificates.
