About Me:
I am a single mom, author, consultant and entrepreneur on a mission to help moms of color flex their mama muscles and live a life of possibilities. I am also an advocate for improving infant and maternal health, and a sucker for designer shoes and handbags. I don’t easily fit into any “mom categories,” but I’m definitely old-school with my parenting and new-school about healthy eating and active lifestyles. When I’m not bike riding or playing tennis with my kids, I can usually be found chasing new dreams and sleeping with my laptop.
Q: How many children do you have?
A: Two children, an 11-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son.
Q: Where do you live and how did you end up there?
A: We live in Queens, New York City, where we recently relocated to after I ditched the suburbs for a more single-mom-friendly locale.
Q: What’s your astrological sign?
A: Leo.
Q: If your life was made into a Lifetime Movie, what would it be called?
A: “How Does She Do It?” Or “I Can’t Make This Stuff Up: Tales of marriage, divorce, single motherhood, entrepreneurship, falling down and picking yourself up … yet again.”
Q: What is one of your favorite quotes?
A: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. .. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” —Marianne Williamson
Q: What TV or movie character are you most like?
A: Carrie Bradshaw meets Joan Clayton from “Girlfriends.”
Q: If you could have dinner with three famous people (dead or alive), who would you invite?
A: Zora Neale Hurston, Nelson Mandela and Michelle Obama.
Q: What is your biggest vice?
A: Cheese — if I could melt it onto everything, I would.
Q: What makes you feel sexy?
A: A great pair of high-heeled shoes. I’m rarely seen not wearing some.
Q: What’s your most memorable ballsy moment?
A: After leaving the work world for three years after the birth of my daughter and then moving to London with my husband, I returned to the U.S. desperately in need of a real job. Within weeks I got a high-paying offer, but I knew it was still less than I deserved — even with the work gap. I turned it down and asked for more! My husband was not happy, and my family thought I was insane. But two days later, they called back with a higher offer — the one I knew I deserved. And I was super proud of myself for taking a stand for my true worth, even when my circumstances looked like I should take what I could get … but I did do a lot of sweating and very little sleeping for those two very long days!
Q: Fill in this blank: “I celebrate life by _______.”
A: Creating new dreams and chasing the hell out of them.
