Dinnertime Challenge: What to Make Without Heading to the Store
I know we've all been in that place where dinnertime has come yet another day, but you haven't yet made it to the store for the week. With cupbaords and a refrigerator looking rather empty and bare, what is it you will make to feed the family that doesn't involve a trip to the store? How do you possibly take a mishmash of food choices and turn them into a meal?
The first thing to consider when making dinner from odds and ends is having a base. Most of us have a store of dry goods in our cupboards, even if we haven't recently been shopping. Choose the first building block to your meal and grow from there.
- Salad Greens
The next thing to consider is what you have that you could add to that base to create a sauce and add some flavor. Things to look for in your cupboards would be:
- milk or cream
- dried or fresh herbs
Now that you have a flavor profile to work in, let's search a bit farther to make this a meal. If you keep frozen vegetables around, now is a great time to throw them in. Should you happen to have fresh, even better. Find those odds and ends that are leftover from other meals and use them up. Toss onions, a scrambled egg and broccoli together with rice and turn it into a fried rice meal. Top a quick pizza dough with a bit of oil, cheese, herbs and boiled potato slices leftover from meatloaf night.
Thinking outside the box will help you create new meals that your family may even put into their regular rotation, and don't be afraid to think of new ways to utilize leftovers. There's nothing better than scraping together a meal and sitting down to something you're proud to serve your family.
