Ol' Fashion Blackened Green Beans and Black Eyed Peas
There is something about cooking black eyed peas and green beans on a stove for a few hours. Of course you could use a crockpot too but I just love walking in the kitchen, seeing this delicious food cooking over a fire like the old days. This recipe reminds me of my great grandmother and her canned green beans and black eyed peas. I tried my hardest to track down her recipe but just couldn't find it so I tried to replicate the taste. I couldn't, but these come close. I hope to add this to my book of recipes to pass down for generations to come. Do you have a recipe like that? One that you want your kids to have, their kids, and their kids?
* 2 pounds bacon, chopped
* 1/2 onion, chopped
* salt and pepper to taste
* 1 teaspoon minced garlic
* 3 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed
* 2 cans black eyed peas
Heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Add bacon, onion and garlic, and cook until browned. Gradually stir in the green beans, stirring to coat with bacon grease. Add black eyed peas. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 5-6 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
