Fun Barbecue Ideas for the Kids
By Laura Sussely-Pope, Pregnancy.org
One of best things about summer is firing up the barbecue grill! While hot dogs and hamburgers are well-established staples that kids love, we have some ideas that will turn an ordinary backyard barbecue into a fun-filled meal!
- Grilled fruit kabobs! Grilling fruit brings out the natural juices and caramelizes them ever so slightly. The best fruits to use have firm flesh. Avoid melons as they soften too much.
You will need about 2 lbs. of assorted fruit such as strawberries, pineapple, mango and kiwi, 1 cup of plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of grated lime zest.
Heat the grill to medium high, thread chunks of washed, peeled or seeded fruit onto skewers. Grill for 3-4 minutes per side, remove from heat and serve with dip! The dip is easily made by combining yogurt, honey and lime zest in the blender and keeping it chilled until eating time. Yum!
- Cookie-cutter burgers. If you know how to barbecue a hamburger, you know how to barbecue these. Simply use a cookie cutter to make the shape of the hamburger before it’s cooked. Your little one could end up with a heart shaped hamburger, star shape – the possibilities are as wide as there are cookie cutters!
- Grilled Pizza. Kids love pizza! This one will probably be your kids’ favorite because they can get completely involved in the preparation.
Get store-bought dough. Then set up a station for the kids with sauce, cheese and their favorite toppings (pepperoni, veggies, olives, etc.
Let the kids roll the dough out into personal sized pizzas.
Spray the grill with olive oil so the pizza dough doesn’t stick! Grill the bottom of the pizza dough and remove them from the grill. Now, the kids can top them with whatever they like.
Finally, spray a cookie sheet with olive oil, put the pizzas on it, place the sheet on the grill and close the lid. Cook until the cheese is melted and crust is crisp. The kids will love their pizza masterpiece!
As always, remember to be very careful around the barbecue as a small child can get seriously burned. Happy barbecuing!
