Gluten Free Retro Party Favorite: Sweet and Sour Rumaki Recipe
Sweet and Sour Rumaki is one of my favorite appetizer recipes. My Mom made it for special occasions and holidays when we were growing up. As a child I always thought of it as for "special occasions" since it was served with a toothpick. It's funny how you associate special occasions with food that you don't eat with a fork! I have fond childhood memories of our family enjoying this recipe on New Years Eve or when we would watch special events on TV like the Superbowl or the Oscars.
When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease I thought my days of enjoying the dish were over. However this recipe can easily be gluten free! Just be sure to use a gluten free bacon. Some brands that are gluten free include: Applegate Farms, SugarDale, Trader Joe's and Hormel Natural Choice (no nitrates or MSG) and Jones Dairy Farm (certified gluten free). Most brands of ketchup are gluten free, however you always want to be sure. Some gluten free brands include: Walden Farms, Heinz, Annie's, Muir Glen and Hunts ketchup. So, as you see this recipe can naturally be gluten free and perfect for any special occasion.
I now make this recipe for Christmas Eve every year. It is always the first dish that is gone, and everyone loves it. I hope you enjoy it as much as our family does.
