The Skinny on Obesity
If you want to see a tragic story- watch the HBO series, Weight of The Nation, on obesity in this country. I saw part 1 of the series and my head is whirling with frightening statistics.
Two thirds of adults in this country are overweight. Eighteen percent of our children are obese, and the numbers are getting larger. And, two thirds of obese children have diseased livers. And of course, the rise of childhood Type 2 diabetes is also tragic. Repeating a couple of times in the program was that heart disease starts in childhood.
According to the Yale Rudd Center, America is one of the fattest nations on earth and childhood obesity continues to rise. This is the first generation of children who has a lower life span than their parents.
It is preventable:
We need to develop exercise routines and eat healthy food.
It’s much easier if we begin early and get our children to enjoy nutritious food so that they have good eating habits when they are exposed to advertising directed at them.
Websites, vending machines, and even social media like Facebook and twitter promote foods that have lots of salt, sugar and/or fat. It’s hard to resist.
The HBO series will have a nationwide community- based outreach component. I look forward to learning more about their plans.
Bill and I are doing what we can in this battle. We lead fun workshops in schools that teach children about good nutrition.
When they are busy making funny healthy creations they don’t just stuff food into their mouths- but think before they eat.
