The Perfect Post-Workout Smoothie
So as you may have already read, I joined a gym. There has been a lot of humor infused in my learning process because, well, I am totally clueless. However, I've actually learned a lot about my body and how it functions before, during, and after a workout and because of that, I've really focused on the food that goes into my body pre and post-workout.
So, I'm no nutritionist or doctor (not even remotely close) but from what I gather getting protein and carbohydrates into your body within 30 minutes after a workout helps to build muscle mass faster, and helps your body to recover more quickly. In addition to that, potassium is eliminated from your body when you sweat during a workout, so replacing it is key as well, because potassium regulates water levels in the body - and not having enough potassium can lead to muscle cramps, constipation, weakness, and fatigue. Um, no thanks.
So my favorite post-workout snack is a Peanut Butter and Banana Smoothie because it adds protein, carbs, and potassium - it's a win win win! Plus, it's a snap to make - here's what you need:
1/2 a banana
1 scoop of Chocolate Whey Protein Isolate
2 tablespoons of peanut butter
1.5 cups of non-fat or low-fat milk
2 handfuls of ice
Once you gather all of your ingredients - toss them into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a cup and enjoy - all of the protein, potassium, and carbohydrates that you need to help you have a speedy workout recovery. Plus, it is almost as good as a milkshake. Yum!
