5 Cinematic Cures for the Rainy Day Blues
Plans cancelled due to rain? Don’t let boredom get the best of you. This list of classic (by my definition) movies, both old and new, are sure to keep you entertained until the storm passes.
The classic coming of age story.
It has all the hallmarks of the high school experience: the crush on Mr. Popular, the kooky exchange student, the drama that comes with the big dance-all punctuated by a chaotic family with each member a little zanier than the next. “Sam. Baker. Davis. Jr”., anyone?
What friendship is all about.
Throwing luncheons, jetting off to Vegas, buying a dress you’ll never wear again when you have literally no money...we have all been there at one time or another! As depressing as this scenario sounds, these girls make it hilarious. They lean on each other, pick each other up when they’re down, give them prescription drugs and scotch on a plane when necessary--like I said, what friendship is all about!
Who can resist a fairy tale?
The dresses! The soundtrack! The lines! I would seriously go back in time and date every man I ever met (ok, almost every man) just so I could use “In case I forget to tell you later, I had a really great time tonight.” line on the regular. What woman can resist the ole dreamy guy falls for a regular girl, sweeps her off her feet, then eventually climbs a metaphorical tower to rescue her storyline? Not this one!
A sweet escape -- lose yourself in the world of Aca-awesome.
Between singing along and laughing so hard that your face hurts, you get to enjoy the sweet but sometimes salty relationship between two college kids who are seriously owning the a capella circuit. The final music number literally gives me chills. First Jesse rocks the mic and then the Bellas bring it-and you know I am doing the Judd Nelson first pump on my sofa right along. (Bonus: even my husband likes this movie though he may never admit that to his man-friends.)
A little potty humor never hurt anyone!
There’s something about watching bad boys trying not to be bad that just lends itself to comedic genius. Throw in a little L.A.I.R.E. (live action interactive role play explorers, natch) and watch the nerdy and-sometimes dirty-puns fly. Of course, in true movie nature our bad boys learn a lesson, mend failed relationships, and are semi-successful role models to their little buddies. And also -- PAUL RUDD. You’re welcome.
What’s your go-to boredom buster? Did I miss any of your favorites?
