Do you Know the Signs of a Heart Attack?
As the leading killer of both women and men, it is important to know the signs of a heart attack for yourself, and your loved ones. And as a daughter of a heart attack victim, I can tell you that losing a loved one is excruciating, especially when it is sudden and may have been prevented. I think we all know that heart attacks can feel like chest pain, but there are many other signs that you should be aware of. The truth is the faster you react at the onset of a heart attack, the greater chance you have of surviving.
Common heart attack symptoms include:
- Chest discomfort
- Discomfort in other areas of the upper body
- Shortness of breath
What I didn’t realize is that women can have additional or different symptoms when they are experiencing a heart attack. They may not even experience any chest pain or discomfort. More women die from heart attacks than men because they may miss the signs that something is wrong. That is just plain scary! Help save a woman’s life (maybe your own), by knowing these other symptoms of a heart attack in women:
- Clammy skin
- Unusual or unexplained fatigue
According to Mayoclinic.com, symptoms can vary and can happen at any time. If you are worried that you may be experiencing a heart attack, seek medical attention right away. Since February is National Heart Health Awareness month, take the time to love your heart by getting a check-up or discussing any concerns you may have with your doctor.
