Girl Loses 65 Pounds to Beat Childhood Obesity
Having trouble sticking to your diet through the holiday season? Let this 10-year-old girl help motivate you.
By 9, Breanna Bond weighed 186 lbs. Like 12.5 million children 2 to 19 in the U.S., she was considered obese. But it was a problem that she seemed to struggle with her entire life, despite her parents’ efforts to get her more involved in extracurricular activities, see a nutritionist and even a psychologist for testing. Big family meals, lack of exercise and junk food from school were all contributing, and Breanna’s weight was starting to take a toll on her self-esteem. Kids were starting to call her names and belittle her. Her parents felt helpless.
But then this family did something remarkable. They worked together to fix not only Breanna’s weight problem, but the way they all looked at food and fitness. Breanna’s mom, Heidi, realized that helping her daughter meant walking (literally!) with her on her path to fitness. The family started walking four miles, four days a week on a trail near their home. They also started the “traffic light diet”, with green-light foods such as vegetables, yellow-light foods such as lean protein and red-light foods such as sweets and simple carbohydrates.
Working together, in less than a year, Breanna dropped 65 lbs! She is 6 lbs away from her goal weight, but has already seen the positive side effects. She has inspired her friends, stopped the teasing, joined new competitive teams, and seen her self-confidence soar. Breanna is an inspiration to us all that you are never too old, or too young, to start caring about your health. And I have to add that Breanna’s mom is also an inspiration for seeing a problem that was affecting so many aspects of her child’s life, and pushing until she found a solution that worked best for the family.
As we are directly in the middle of the holiday season (aka – the hardest season to eat healthy), I wanted to point you to a few resources from other Lifetime Moms Contributors that may help us all continue on a healthy journey:
