Juicing and Weight Loss… It’s All the Rage in Hollywood!
Last year it was all about the protein only diet. No carbs, no sugar, no gluten, no nothin’. This year it seems to be all about the detox and “the cleanse.” From celebrity gossip magazines and sites to special offer and deal sites like Groupon, I feel like I’m inundated with all these new juice and detox diets that are guaranteed to bring on results, and make me look red carpet ready. (In mommy terms: red carpet ready equates to being able to go swimming on a play-date or pool party and not having the world wincing at the mounds of flesh hanging from said body).
Okay, maybe I’m being a little harsh (after all, self deprecation isn’t my finest quality), but in an on going effort to feel good and look good, I must admit I’ve become quite obsessed and interested in this latest craze. Like most people, through the holidays I found myself eating and drinking as if I played in the NFL. The idea of a cleanse that includes nothing but fruits and vegetables in a liquid fashion, and sort of restarts your system, does sound appealing.
Last year I actually gave it a shot. I thought I’d save myself money compared to some of the delivery diets and cleanses (below), but honestly, juicing requires a LOT of fruits and vegetables just to get to 16 oz. of liquid. So it probably ended up costing me $300 for a 5-day stretch. Plus, let’s just say that a) I spent pretty much all 5 days in the kitchen, b) my house smelled like an orchard, and c) I wanted to blow my brains out. Okay, that may be an exaggeration. But, in truth, it was a lot of work. I felt better, yes, but I also had red, green, and raw hands and a manicure that was totally destroyed. Soooo not how the celebrities do it.
Speaking of how celebrity mamas do it, here are some of the popular juice cleanses that Hollywood hotties are flocking to.
What: Cooler Cleanse
Celebrity draw: Salma Hayek
How it works: Choose from a 3 or 5 day cleanse. Designed to give your body a longer break from digesting solid food and fighting irritants, this program triggers a deeper inner cleaning, promotes weight loss if you need it and powerfully pumps up your youthfulness and vigor.
Try it if:
- You have already had some experience cleansing and are ready for more.
- You are new to cleansing but eager to make a bigger change.
- Your diet is rich in fresh, whole foods as well as low in processed foods and stimulants, and you feel ready for a deeper dive into detoxing.
Cost: 5 Day cleanse is $58 dollars a day.
Result: Possible weight loss, fresh skin, energy and a dip in your bank account.
What: Master Cleanse Diet
Celebrity draw: Beyonce Knowles (and many, many more)
How it works: Master Cleanse fast restricts you to a cayenne pepper-laced elixir for 10 days. Master Cleanse is a modified juice fast that permits no food, substituting tea and lemonade made with maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Proponents claim that the diet detoxifies the body and removes excess fat.
Cost: …. Pretty much nothing, but your sanity.
Result: Becoming a moody BIAAATCH for 10 days. I watched a coworker a few years ago do this. She honestly seemed a little crazy for the first few days. But by day 10, it looked like she had lost 10 pounds. Still… not sold on this one.
What: Pressed Juicery
Celebrity Draw: Jennifer Garner, Nicole Ritchie, Gwen Stefani, Rooney Mara
How it works: Choose from a 3 or 5 day cleanse, and then select which juices you want for each day. Available through delivery or pick up, You will receive a daily supply of eight, 16 fl. oz. beverages straight to your doorstep each morning. Juices are produced on a hydraulic press, which extracts straight from the pulp, minimizing the changes that juices undergo during typical juicing processes, and releasing essential vitamins and minerals into each beverage. You drink the first one (1) when your beverages arrive and the last one (6) at least two hours before you go to bed…. Roughly about 6 hours apart.
Each beverage is designed to replace solid foods and snacks, and subsequently it is important to avoidalcohol, energy drinks, caffeine, and nicotine while you are on the cleanse programs.
Cost: 5-Day program (that’s 5 juices daily) – about $350
Result: While weight loss isn’t guaranteed, you will likely feel lighter and slimmer and definitely refreshed and rebalanced. This is my favorite one!
