Would You Use a Feeding Tube to Lose Weight?
I'm not going to lie - with my wedding coming up in September, dropping a couple of pounds is definitely at the top of my "Wedding To-Do" list. But when I read an article in the New York Times about brides using a feeding tube for 10 days in order to lose weight, I was downright alarmed.
"Yep. It's a feeding tube. Oh, but I'm gonna look SO good for my wedding."

A crazy man in Florida, also known as Dr. Oliver Di Pietro, is offering what he calls the K-E diet, which uses a nasogastric tube (better known as an NG Tube) that is threaded through your nose and down your esophagus into your stomach to provide all calories and nourishment over a 10 day period. It's only 800 calories per day, and while I'm no doctor, I'm pretty sure that is dangerously low, as in not healthy. What strikes me, however, is that an NG tube is usually inserted into a very sick person - often infants who are unable to get proper nutrition or ingest solids, and others who are recovering from surgery and illness - and not used for a crash diet. But hey! I'm glad we finally figured out how to do that, because what the world was missing was a crash diet that involved a feeding tube.
It is being hailed as an amazing way to lose up to 20 pounds in 10 days. And really, it's a steal at $1,500. (That was sarcasm. More to come.) Dr. Di Pietro says that on the K-E Diet, the body enters a state of ketosis (that sounds vaguely familiar from the 12 days that I managed to stick to the Atkins Diet) where the body burns fat rather than sugar. Amazing. Incredible. All you have to do is have a tube shoved down your nose and wear it 24/7 for the next 10 days. Out in public. To sleep. Picking your kids up at school. All with a feeding tube.
I wonder if they offer tubes in different colors? Or maybe you can upgrade to a bedazzled tube? So sexy.
A few of my thoughts:
1. This is insane.
2. Is your gut telling you that this isn't safe? Go with that.
3. I'd bet money on the fact that after the tube comes out, patients gain every bit of this weight back within the month.
4. How long until this doctor loses his license?
5. This is insane. I know I already said that, but just wow.
I know I've made my opinion on this clear, but I'm dying to know - would you try this? Do you know anyone who would?
