Getting Ready For The Holidays

I love this time of the year, when it is the time to start thinking about holiday decorating. We will be spending the holidays skiing at the Park City Mountain Resort in Utah this year, so I am in a hurry to get the holiday decorations in my home up even earlier than normal, so we can enjoy the holidays at home before our trip. I decided that today is the day to get started.

I entered my garage where we store our bountiful boxes of Christmas décor just to realize that maybe I should bring my vacuum cleaner in for a visit too. Luckily we invested in good storage containers (red of course) a few years back, so all our decorations are safely inside the red plastic boxes. I opened some of the boxes in the garage to sort out the ones with the tree decorations and the ones with lights, garland and other decorative items. This is also the time when I have to decide what our holiday decorating theme will be this year.

Yes, I always have a holiday decorating theme! I usually start with the color combination, my three favorites are not really surprising; they are blue and silver, red and gold and red and green. But color is only a starting point – after that I pick between angels and Santa with elves, or debate between snowmen and red robins. And of course, in our family it’s also choosing more traditional American decoration or more Scandinavian style – or a mix of both.

The color scheme doesn’t really have to be starting point – but I suggest that you have some type of idea or theme to get a balanced look for your home. Remember, there is no need to bring all of your holiday décor out - there is always the next year. If you have a family heirloom, or a new decorative piece or any one item you would like to be part of the décor – pick the color scheme from that item and start with that. One year I framed old Coca-Cola holiday ads and they were my starting point for vintage, pop-style holiday décor.  This year I am starting my decorating with a pair of glass votives designed by Alvar Aalto, made by Iittala, and going with blue, white and silver colors, with snowflake decorations. That way we can start celebrating our snow-filled holiday now.
