Tennis Inspired Modern Preppy Bedroom Design

My kids and I were introduced to the great game of tennis this past week with QuickStart Youth Program at no less than the U.S. Open itself. While watching Venus Williams play in her fashionable tennis outfit, designed by her, I knew that I had to design a tennis-inspired room.

Modern Preppy Tennis Room Design Board

Can I just say that I love what I came up with?

When I found purple argyle bedding by Lacoste I was  determined to use two shades of purple and tennis-ball yellow to create a tennis inspired bedroom in a modern preppy style. Forget about tennis-ball accessories, just bring on sophistication, trendy colors and style - just like Serena does.  The bed and the bedding are available both for single and double players, so it is up to you to make this room for one or two.

Purple - Yellow Color Sceme

COLORS

I used two tones of purple for the walls, a lighter base color and a darker shade for thick stripes. You could also use stripe wall decals for some contrast. The other two main colors are bright warm yellow and white, popping out from the purple and making the room look fresh. The accent colors that fit this color scheme are red and green, check out the guidance from the vintage poster and you can see how they fit together with this look. Behr paints have a great way to try the colors on different room designs - so handy!

BEDDING

Did I already say how much I love the purple argyle Lacoste bedding set? The set comes with a comforter, standard sham, flat sheet, fitted sheet and pillowcase, but you can also get solid color sheet sets in white, yellow or light green. A cable knit throw gives the bed and the room that preppy tennis look, I found the yellow one at Horchow. My first choices for cable knit throws would have been Lacoste or Ralph Lauren, but I couldn't find a yellow one online. Hot pink, white or light green would also work.

Modern Furniture

FURNITURE

I fell in love with the Sova bed from CB2 with handwoven natural rattan headboard. I also found natural rattan storage baskets that give the feeling of a tennis racket - or the net.

Tennis Room Storage

The Harmonica Wardrobe and dresser leave the storage baskets visible - great for those tennis shoes and tennis balls! The Casa table lamp is also a natural rattan weave to complete the look, all from CB2. The lamps look great on the Engan nightstands from IKEA.

The traditional director's chair goes well with the tennis look, and brings in the vintage charm to an otherwise fairly modern room. The yellow LACK shelves from IKEA are perfect for trophies and add a nice pop of color on the walls.

Window Coverings

FLOOR AND WINDOWS

Dark hardwood flooring and white rug would be ideal, I love the contrast of a white rug on a dark floor and it would fit this room perfectly. If you have light colored carpet, I'd recommend a contrasting, darker rug. Since the walls already have purple, and the furniture is dark, I'd match the wood tones with natural blinds and contrast them with sheer white curtain panels. Also, a white roller roman shade would go nicely.

ACCESSORIZE

Bring in some color with accents like the yellow alarm clock (from IKEA). Your tennis equipment doesn't have to hide in the closet in this room - or find a vintage tennis racket and display it on the wall. The vintage tennis poster I found combines the vintage tennis look and has nice colors, even the trendy purple I was looking for. With this printed poster in the room it will be easy to keep the color scheme in mind - all others but the tennis ball yellow can be found in the picture. You can find vintage tennis posters online - or you can frame your own tennis pictures to add a personal touch.
