In My Opinion
The 3 Reasons Pinterest Makes Me Feel Pathetic
As if Facebook isn’t enough to make you feel bad about your life and remind you that know one would ever really remember your birthday if it wasn’t blasted digitally, now there’s a new(ish) social platform really designed to time suck the hell out of your life and make you feel craptastic….
Welcome to PINTEREST: The best and worst social media site all rolled into one.
When I first got on to Pinterest, I was overwhelmed. Where had I been? And why hadn’t I been pinning and re-pinning all my life. A digital vision board of sorts where you can steal ideas from other “visionaries” and put it on your own wall? Brilliant. Within days, I had built boards with images of things I loved….. HOME, FOOD, PARTY, CRAFTS…
The pictures I pinned to my boards made me feel fantastic: it appears as if I have phenomenal taste. But on the flip side: it appears as if the life I really have is totally uninspired, compared to this gorgeous kitchen replete with a chalkboard wall and reclaimed wood island. Boy, my life blows.
Like I said, there many reasons why Pinterest is great, but there are also a few reasons why it’s NOT great and why it makes me feel like a big fat looooooooooser. (However, I did find this great flat belly diet on there…) But I digress….
1) I Just Don’t Look That Cool in Clothes. I consider myself stylish and on trend. I care about my wardrobe and know how to put a look together. But there’s something about the pictures that fashionistas post on Pinterest of various looks that make me feel El Lamo. First of all, does anyone really stand like that? Head tilted, wrists displaying bangles, knees inward to make leg appear lean… NO. I take a picture and suck in my gut, sure, but I don’t look hip doing it. I’m inspired by the clothes I see on pinterest but end up feeling bad about how they look cooler on the models than they do on me.
2)Travel. People (including me) post a ton of pictures of places they want to go and see. These exotic photos only remind me of one thing: I have a $17 voucher on Southwest and if I’m lucky it’ll cover takeoff during a “getaway” from LAX to FRESNO. (Folks, look up Fresno. Not fun. AND not too far from LA. Catch my drift???)
3) She’s Crafty… I’m Not. If I had a dime for every re-pin or "like" of some DARLING project that would organize my house, charm my visitors and make my son’s room like he lives in a Land of Nod catalogue, I would be rich. OMG. This category is by far the worst, most depressing category as it reminds me how much I love something that will undoubtedly ruin a good manicure and that I WILL NEVER HAVE TIME TO DO.
I’d continue to list all the reasons why Pinterest makes me feel bad, but frankly, I just moved to a new apartment, and I have some decorating to do. Better hit up my “Perfectly Home” board for that….. That’s your cue to go to my Pinterest page and follow me. Please?? It’ll make me feel less depressed. Thanks!
