5 Quick and Affordable Ways to Update Your Bedroom
We have lived in our "new" apartment for a year now, and I have to admit, it's still not what I would like it to look like. I know, I know, I love decorating, but like they say that the shoemaker's daughter never has good shoes... You get the picture, my house isn't picture perfect. One of the rooms that really needs the biggest facelift is our bedroom. I have come to a realization that it's not just that our bedroom looks like blah, but many other things in the bedroom have become blah too. No - I'm not going where you are thinking I'm going. I'm talking about my sleep. Most nights I fall asleep on our couch in the living room, and crawl into bed without even looking around the room and pass out. I get up the next morning and leave the room. We have our bedroom on a loft and we have a walk-in-closet downstairs (well, one thing that I have done in our place - I turned the loft into a bedroom and turned the bedroom into a large walk-in-closet!!) and the bedroom basically just consists of our bed and side tables.
I have come to a realization that change is needed and quick! While I am planning on doing something more time consuming, I came up with a quick and easy way to get some spice in the bedroom with not much time and not that much money either.
1. Keep Your Bedroom Clean - Clean The Clutter!
This might not be the biggest trick in the world and should probably go without saying, but keeping your bedroom clean and organized makes a big difference in your sleep and your ability to relax. Get used to a morning routine of cleaning the dirty socks off the floor, and placing all of the dirty clothes in a hamper. If the hamper is overflowing most times, either figure out a way to make your laundry routine go smoother or do something as radical as buying a new hamper! There is no shame in having multiple hampers of dirty laundry as long as it's off the floor and off the furniture. (I'm talking to you - when is the last time you actually sat in that chair in your bedroom?)
2. Make It Smell Good.
I'm serious. You will sleep better and you will feel better when your bedroom smells like vanilla, sandalwood or chamomille, and the most relaxing and calming scent of them all is lavender. There are several great scented candles in specialty stores and even in the grocery stores, but for safety reasons, consider other scent products, like lavender satchels. You can get very inexpensive lavender products from Limauge Boutique.
3. Add Ambiance Lighting.
If your lighting is either too harsh, or too dim for you to see well enough to do anything, it is time to fix the lighting situation in your bedroom. While you will need the better lighting for those times when you're cleaning, as in step 1... you will feel more relaxed if the lighting in the evening isn't too harsh. Your bedroom should have evening time soothing light, in which you might be also able to read, as well as ambiance lighting for those last minutes before you go to sleep. Candles give nice ambiance lighting too - but remember the safety issue again! You might want to check the lighting in your bedroom, and you may not even need new lamps - getting a different kind of lightbulb with softer light might help.
4. New Bedding - Or At Least New Pillows!
Nothing spices up your bedroom faster than getting a new bedding set. If you can't do that, just change the pillows! You will sleep better and feel refreshed with a new pillow. And to change the look in your bedroom - put some throw pillows on your bed as well. Pillow overhaul alone will make a difference, I guarantee.
5. New Rules - Clean the Mental & Work Clutter Out!
Yes - set new rules for your bedroom behavior. The cleaning is only one, but you will also have to clean your mental clutter. Make a rule of no working in your bedroom or in bed. You will never relax and get a good night's sleep. Limit TV, smartphone and laptop time - well, your laptop really shouldn't even find it's way to your bedroom. This will help to keep your bedroom looking and feeling more serene.
