Just for Me
Back To School...COCKTAILS!
It's back to school time, which means back-to-school shopping. Which means stocking up on supplies like pencils, pens, glue sticks, notebooks, martini glasses...
Yeah, that's right. Martini glasses. And cocktail napkins. And a nice crudite platter. Maybe some cheesy, nibbley things. And while you're at it, swing on over to your favorite shoe store and pick up a cute new pair of completely insensible heels. Oooh yes, those really high strappy ones that you have no occasion for.
I'm giving you an occasion.
It's time for the first annual Moms Only Back to School Cocktail Party.
You and your mom friends deserve to celebrate. You juggled activities, vacations, work, babysitters, camps, family barbecues, pool visits and sleepovers all summer long. Yes, it was fun. It was also work.
But starting next week, the kids are on a schedule for several hours a day. Those are several hours a day that you won't have to hear, "I'm bored! What are we going to do today?" That's cause for celebration!
I'm having mine the Thursday after Labor Day. Cute shoes are optional but enthusiastically encouraged. I'm serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails and some finger foods. The signature cocktail? One I've just come up with. I'm calling it the Back-To-Schooltini.
Here's my menu:
Dates stuffed with Parmesan and Walnuts
Hummus, Kalamata olives and pita triangles
cheese platter with crackers (sharp cheddars, gorgonzola and other strong hard cheeses go great with the apple in Back-to-Schooltinis)
Long live academia! Cheers!
Mix 1 oz vodka, 4 oz apple juice and a splash of cranberry, and a cinnamon stick in a cocktail mixer with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass, float a twist of apple skin and garnish with the cinnamon stick.
Pomegranate Sparklers (from Williams-Sonoma's "Cocktail Parties")
Chill 4 martini glasses. Fill cocktail shaker half full with ice. Add 2 oz pomegranate syrup and fresh lime juice, cover and shake for 20 seconds. Strain and top with sparkling water. Garnish each glass with a lime slice and a few pomegranate seeds.
