Ballsy, Brave and Hot: Some Fab Single Moms on The Tube
Last week Lifetime debuted a new Tuesday night reality series "Life's a Tripp," documenting daughter of Sarah Palin and former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Bristol Palin. The show follows Palin setting out to create a new life in Los Angeles for herself and young son Tripp, leaving Wasilla, Alaska and all that comes with being "a Palin."
Though I personally and politically have very little in common with Bristol and her family, I do find it interesting to watch a (real) young single mom navigating the parenting waters all while being followed by a camera crew. It also got me thinking about some of the memorable [fictional] single mamas that have made a splash on TV over the years. Here are some of my favorites:
Kate & Allie. HELLO. As a child who grew up in the 80's and lived in sort of a Kate & Allie type environment, this is my number one! My (single) mom and I lived in an apartment building with three other single moms and their kids and spent days/nights together for years, forging friendship and family. I loved their ability to support one another through good times and bad. Every mom (single or totally committed) needs a support system, and this show provided a road map for moms everywhere. And I had a crush on Chip.
One Day at a Time. I love watching reruns of this 1970's show not just because Valerie Bertinelli is adorable in bell bottoms and has the hair that I will never be able to recreate, expensive products and all, but also because Bonnie Franklin as Ann Romano is one tough cookie. Raising two teenage daughters ain't easy and when you have a handyman like "Schneider" it's tough to keep your cool. Plus, this show like many of those 70's sitcoms (Um, anyone remember the kidnap episode of "Different Strokes?" Dudley, don't do it!), this show tackled big social issues like sexual harassment, infidelity, birth control, and even suicide. Yikes.
Rachel Green. As in Ross's Rachel. Okay, so “Friends” was hardly a sitcom focusing on being a single mom. But a "pregnant" Jennifer Aniston should get some sort of a mention, because, frankly, she's just plain hot. That's really all I got on this one....
Lauren Graham. First as Lorelai Gilmore on "The Gilmore Girls" then as Sarah Braverman on NBC's "Parenthood," this actress has played two badass single moms. Both characters were so relatable. Their fears, hopes and desires resonate with me and thanks to great writing and humble moments, made me laugh too.
Last, but certainly not least....
Nancy, Drug Slingin', Mother Effin' Botwin. What happens when you take a suddenly widowed suburban PTA mom and introduce her to the world of marijuana? Crazy sh*t happens, that's what! While the "Weeds" protagonist is certainly the least inspirational and role model-like mother, like EVER, Nancy Botwin definitely keeps life interesting and is impressive (as a criminal) in her 5-inch heels with an iced latte in hand. Generally, I'm shocked and disturbed by every decision she makes (or doesn't make), but somehow, I am always rooting for her!
Who are your favorite Single TV moms of all time?
