The Role Mommy Summer Reading List
Now that Memorial Day has passed us by and summer is right around the corner, it's time to finally wind down, relax and get back to some great beach reads. Since many of you have already tore through Fifty Shades of Grey, I won't be recommending it for your summer assignment - unless of course you haven't yet jumped on the Grey wagon. For the rest of us, here's a list of books you'll want to dive into this season:
The Orphanmaster: Set in the 17th century, this debut novel by Jean Zimmerman takes place in New Amsterdam which is now present day New York City. When orphans begin disappearing, a 20 year old trader investigates along with a handsome British spy named Edward Drummond. Mystery, intrigue and romance - three ingredients for the perfect beach read!
Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake: One of my all time favorite writers, former New York Times columnist Anna Quindlen is what I would call the quintessential women's writer. She captures what many of us are thinking and feeling at all ages and stages, and in this memoir, she does not disappoint. Celebrating everything from marriage to girlfriends, to faith, love and loss, Quindlen explores her past, present and future and discovers what really matters most in her life.
The God Box: My Mother's Gift of Faith, Love and Letting Go: Shameless plug for a book I got the chance to publicize before it even launched. This bittersweet memoir which just made the New York Times bestseller's list shares the story of Mary Lou Quinlan's mom, Mary Finlayson, who kept a God Box full of wishes and worries that she held for family members, friends and even strangers. When Mary dies, her daughter discovers 10 of her God boxes, filled with over two decades worth of memories. After reading more than 1000 notes, Quinlan takes an emotional journey back to her past while discovering the secret hopes her mom tucked away and placed in God's hands.
Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt: If you loved The Help, then try this debut novel by Beth Hoffman on for size. When Cee Cee's mother is killed in a car accident, she is whisked away to Georgia where she encounters a world of prosperity where she meets a group of strong and eccentric women who inevitably wind up filling her life with love, humor and adventure. While this book debuted in 2010, it's currently available in paperback and is still riding high at the top of the book charts.
The Dovekeepers: When it comes to summer reading, I always rely on my mom's favorite picks and this year, her vote goes to The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. If you love historical fiction, then you won't be able to put down this page turner. Set more than 2000 years ago during the battle of Masada, the novel centers on four extraordinary women who come to the historic mountain through different paths.
The Lifeboat: If you're a fan of Titanic (I mean who isn't), then this novel by Charlotte Rogan won't leave you disappointed. Filled with romance, drama and intrigue, the book centers on the life of Grace Winter, a 22 year old newlywed who marries into a wealthy family only to lose her new husband Henry while they are on board a luxury liner. Though Henry safely places her on board a lifeboat that is over capacity, Grace fights to survive as she is left to fend for herself.
