Summer Camp Flicks That’ll Take You Back…
Starting at the age of 8, I went to sleep away camp every summer. I LOVED it. Nestled in the Malibu Hills, overlooking the Pacific Ocean (not too shabby, I know), I spent almost 10 summers (including becoming a counselor) at that camp. I knew every song, every path, every boy.... Oh, the boys....
Certainly, at age 8, I had no interest in boys... with the exception of the counselor who was in charge of the canteen where I could choose between candy or stamps for letters... But I digress.... It was probably during my final year as a camper, prior to becoming a C.I.T. (Counselor In Training) that I realized my best friend FOR.EV.ER. would much rather be sneaking out after lights out than braiding my hair and making friendship bracelets. (OMG, I miss those friendship bracelets. I was soooo good at making those. Like, TO.TAL.LY. rad.)
Some of the most memorable things from my years at summer camp:
My best friend losing her virginity in the middle of the field and EVERYONE finding out the next day.
Teasing my bangs and using so much Aquanet I actually once choked.
Camp Olympics. My team lost. Always.
Drama at Camp. I was the queen.
Archery. I sucked.
Having a massive crush on a boy who didn’t talk to me once. The. Entire. Summer.
Two words: Bug Repellent.
Finding a huge spider in my sleeping bag. And crying myself to sleep.
Writing letters. Probably the thing I miss most.
Now that I am a parent and living on the other side of the proverbial camp lake, I feel sentimental and jealous about the summers that lie ahead for my son... Though he's not even 5 and sleep away camp is not anywhere in his near future (unless you count nights at my mom's house) thinking about our summer plans and how we will fill the days, brings me back in time…The cabins, the warmth of a sleeping bag, the muted glow of a flashlight, the smell of dirt and campfires and roasted marshmallows.
Perhaps you never experienced sleepaway camp firsthand, but if you're anything like me, you may have lived vicariously through those "campy" summer camp themed movies from the 80's and 90's.
So, while no one I know is on the brink of losing their virginity in a soccer field or hiking in the same clothes for 3 days, there are movies that will always remind me of growing up in the 80’s and early 90’s. Hope watching these brings back some fun memories. Now let's raid the boys!
